Our first foray into Russia was a success and we inflicted some damage on the Russian troops that are massing behind the border.
During the mission it was noted that a squadron of SU-30M fighters are based at Vuojarvi Highway Strip. They managed to scramble a lot of aircraft to harass us and other allied flights.
Accordingly your next job is to destroy the runway at Vuojarvi. In addition you are to destroy Sodankyla AB slightly north of Vuojarvi.
There are no known ground threats at and around Vuojarvi but a AAA battalion is north of Sodankyla. We hope that this will be destroyed before you get there but adjust your "off target" flight plan to suit.
Intelligence informs us that a suspected SA-10 ADB is at Kamilarvi, SE of the target area. This must be should and destroyed to protect the package.
All flights in your package are from the 185th squadron at Gallivare AB.
Divert air base is at Kittlia, runway 16/34, VHF 118.95, tacan 056X. ILS for both directions is 111.90.
Package 1286 Cowboy 1 is a two ship OCA flight. MS is for destruction of the runway at Vuojarvi. There is no PS for this flight.
Falcon 1 is a two ship OCA flight. MS is for destruction of the runway at Sodankyla. There is no PS for this flight.
Fury 1 is a four ship SEAD flight. MS is no losses to the flight from known or suspected radar guided SAMs. PS for one loss to the escort and OCA flights from radar guided SAMs.
Lobo 1 is the four ship Escort and Package Commander. MS is no losses from air threats. PS is given for 1 loss.
IDM will be from Lobo 1.
Timings
TO for Cowboy 1 is 12:34hrs with cruise altitude at FL250. IDM 1, VHF 1 (UHF 16 on ground), tacan 11/74.
TO for Falcon1 is 12:35hrs with cruise altitude at FL240. IDM 2, VHF 2 (UHF 17 on ground), tacan 16/79.
TO for Fury 1 is 12:32hrs with cruise altitude at FL270. IDM 3, VHF 3 (UHF 18 on ground), tacan 21/84.
TO for Lobo 1 is 12:30hrs with cruise altitude at FL280. IDM 4, VHF 4 (UHF 19 on ground), tacan 26/89.
Flight path is fixed for mutual support. Should you wish to alter the route then ALL flights must be altered to match.
Airbase Operations For taxi, take off and landing, all involving tower comms, the package shall set VHF 15 for tower comms. Own flight comms shall be UHF 16 - 19 dependant on IDM number.
All flights will be on their briefed VHF frequency and UHF 6 during the flight.
Weapons choice is free.

Edit as confirmed same SA-10.
Int Update ========
The SA-10 near Kamilarvi had the Flap Lid shacked last mission so is ineffective and no factor for this Mission.
AAA unit at Sodankyla already had the Fire Can destroyed so is optical guidance only.
SIGINT suggests there is a Tank Bn with 2S6 (SA-19) in the vicinity of Orajarvi that should not be a factor for the attack on Sodankyla Airstrip, subject to mission planning to avoid the threat.
SIGINT also indicates a further Tank Bn, likely with 2S6 (SA-19), in the area of Raudanjoki that will be a factor for any low level attack on Vuojarvi airstrip.

For mission planning purposes and using our Weapons Officer, Zipgun's Weapon Effectiveness Guide, each runway segment requires the following number of hits to destroy it, depending on the weapon employed:
Weapon # Hits Req # Carried per aircraft Maximum # Runway
(with 2 Wing fuel tanks) Sections Destroyed/Ac
AGM 65D 4 6 1.50
AGM 65G 3 2 0.66
BLU-107/B 1 6 6.00
GBU-12B/B 4 4 1.00
GBU-24/B 3 2 0.66
GBU-24 A/B 2 2 1.00
GBU-31/v1 JDAM 3 2 0.66
GBU-31/v3 JDAM 2 2 1.00
GBU-38/B JDAM 4 4 1.00
GBU-39/B SDB 5 8 1.60
GBU-54/B L-JDAM 4 4 1.00
Obviously BLU-107/B offer the greatest bang for the buck but require a low-level attack, however even 1 aircraft could knock out the entire runway. SDBs offer excellent stand-off and the next largest number of Sections destroyed per aircraft at 1.6, meaning a 2-ship could knock out 3 runway sections between them, but these would have to be limited to firing 4 SDBs at a time per aircraft due to Bandwidth limitations. AGM-65D offer 1.5 Sections/aircraft, although there may be issues with using these against runway sections if you can't achieve a point lock.
GBU-12B/B, GBU-24 A/B, GBU-31v3, GBU-38B JDAM and GBU-54/B L-JDAM all offer the same maximum ratio of Sections destroyed per aircraft of 1.00. From these weapons, the recommended one for use against runway sections is the GBU-31v3.
Finally, the AGM-65G (Used in force correlation track to avoid point lock issues that AGM-65D is likely to have), GBU-24/B and GBU 31/v1 JDAM all offer a maximum kill ratio per aircraft of 0.66 and none of these are recommended for this mission.

Plan
Put in a N-S CAP approx 25nm West of target with Fury1 covering over targets, including Su-30M airbase.
Execution
No A2A threats encountered. Remained on CAP for OCA strikes and then for Fury1 to engage ground targets using GBU.
RTB'd as tail-end-charlie with an ILS approach onto R30.

We took off, set up CAP and scanned for SAM targets. Zero air picture made the CAP easy for us. After the OCA completed their missions, we looked for targets to drop our GBU54s on and found one battalion of stationary targets and one with movers (including some SA-19s), so we dropped all bombs on those and fired our 88s at anything that was emitting. Egress was uneventful, a straight in approach to runway 30 with ILS. All RTB.

Cowboy1 OCA strike cowboy 11 mango AA=0 AG=0 KIA cowboy 12 Griffin AA=0 AG=4 RTB
Ingressed as planned, went low level and when turning in to the target 1 was hit by an SA-14 and damaged. 2 then took lead and attacked the runway putting it out of action. 1 decided to attack being lined up on the runway all bombs hit target but only did more damage as the runway was already destroyed by 2. On pulling off target 1 was hit again by an SA-19 and the AC exploded. 2 RTBd with bad lag probs and exploded upon touchdown in what seemed to be a connection related mishap. |

Took off in front of Cowboy 1 and allowed them to over take during ingress. At steer point 5 we began our decent. Just as we were about to turn into the target, 2 called out a moving column of Triple A to our 12 o'clock. 1 immediately turned West, 2 took the lead proceeded towards the target and dropped his bombs. 1 followed 2 in and dropped his bombs but due to the fact that the Arming delays had not been set up correctly, the bombs did not explode. 1 had a "tech" issue just before he RTBd
