Taking FLAK

In anticipation of future missions into the area, we need to target some AAA battalions near Fjallsund

The package will consist of 3 flights: 2 INTERDICTION, and 1 SWEEP/ESCORT – objectives are:

  • COWBOY and FALCON – Destroy the AAA battalions --Departs from the 185th @ Gallivare TO= 1416 & 1417–@ FL22 & FL20 -- Payload is free = currently loaded with CBU-103s

  • FURY –Package Commander-- Provide air cover for the package --Departs from the 185th @ Gallivare TO= 1415 @FL27

COMM PLAN:

  • COWBOY: IDM 1, VHF 1 (UHF 16 on ground), tacan 11/74.

  • FALCON: IDM 2, VHF 2 (UHF 17 on ground), tacan 16/79.

  • FURY: IDM 3, VHF 3 (UHF 18 on ground), tacan 21/84.

The AI flights are loaded with CBU-103 CEM clusters. Loadout may be changed, but we expect high kill-yield on these units.

CBU-103s are “JDAM” cluster bombs and can be dropped from a distance with high accuracy. If the units are moving, they must be led by placing the TGP area mode pointer to where the units will be.

Important Update

Since the mission was not not flown last Sunday, HQ has an update on target positions:

COWBOY's target battalion has moved East -- new targets have been located at the following LAT/LON:
N66 50.341 E24 24.421
Once in the jet, both AI flights should enter this into a STP for updated tasking.

COWBOY will be tasked to destroy AAA battalions at that location. If COWBOY/FALCON kill their AAA target battalions, they should hit the secondary Armored units at the LAN/LON provided.

An active SA-10 has moved SE of the target area to inhibit operations to the south.

AI flights must keep their attacks tight and come-off away from SAM defenses. MIG-29S aircraft have also moved into the area and maybe on alert. Escorts should be aware of these new threats!!!

Mission success:

COWBOY & FALCON: 6 units killed per aircraft.

FURY: no losses from enemy air.

IDM and TACAN are per SOP ------ IDM hosted by FURY

Ingress was clear, we started engaging AG, required multiple passes.

When Falcon1 called about the possibility to engage the Mig29s on the runway, decided against it and instead stay on mission.

On the last pass, the 2nd element picked up the 29s turning hot (as they had been heading SE until then) and they took shots of opportunity and turned cold.

The plan had been to RTB, and after their shots we rejoined, just as Falcon1 turned back to support.

We then rejoined and headed towards home plate. On the way, it looked like another group of Su33 was intercepting us and the 2nd element which was closer, engaged at first. We then figured out there was at least one F15 mixed in.

We then got close to home plate as a package, and decided to land after Falcon. While holding we had yet another group of Su33s intercepting and we engaged, and then landed.

Uneventful ingress, but #2 and #3 needed one more pass to get the bombs off. The targets were in one clear column, and only one truck survived.

While capping to the east #2 saw six MiGs close to takeoff, but the other flight continued their A2G attack because they had still units from the main target left.

Heading back west to avoid being sandwiched between the SA-10 and another AAA, the flight regrouped and shot down 3 of the MiGs.

Following Cowboy on the way back, no more engagements were possible with the friendlies in the middle.
