Command noted intel about enemy Q5-N aircraft that has been managing to get through and inflict some damage on friendly forces. They have identified two air bases that they operate from. Your task is to put one of them, Hyon'Ni, out of action.

Package 1978
Jaguar 1 (OCA Strike) - 2 x F-16C-50, TCN 11/74
Hammer 2 (SEAD Escort) - 2 x F-16C-50, TCN 12/75
Python 5 (Escort) - 4 x F-16C-50, TCN 13/76

MS is given for destruction of the runway with no losses to Jaguar 1 prior to the OCA attack, with a partial if one of Jaguar is lost before the attack.

This is a long mission (490nm round trip) with no tankers available so fuel conservation is crucial.

Yechon is the alternate airbase.

We have intel that SA-15s are active south of Chuncheon.

Numerous air threats from MiG-19s to MiG-29A are in the theatre and active.

Good luck

Flight Role: OCA Strike

Jaguar 11 "Griffin" AA=0 AG=1 RTB
Jaguar 12 "Fisty" AA=0 AG=1 RTB

MS

Took off and made a slow climb to FL270 before being asked to hold while the escorts dealt with various air threats.

We loaded up with fuel, carrying 2 x 600 gall and 1 x 300 gall centreline tanks.

After losing three of the escort we considered aborting the mission but as the AWACs call said the skies were clear and we only had 50 miles to go, we pushed on.

We were loaded with 2 x GBU-31 (v) 3-4-B each. It takes two to destroy a section of runway. We plotted two sections of the runway between us pre-flight and all four of our GPS guided bombs hit home and two sections of runway were destroyed.

We RTB'd without incident for a straight in approach. We didn't need all the fuel, even with the various holds, and landed with around 8000 pounds left in the jet.

Flight Role: Escort

Python 51 "Pegasus" AA=1, AG=0, MIA
Python 52 "Mango" AA=1, AG=0, KIA
Python 53 "Gekko" AA=4, AG=0, RTB
Python 54 "Jules" AA=3, AG=0, KIA

On ingress, targets were reported by AWACS to the east and west of our track. 2nd element was first sent to investigate targets to the west, but they were not found on radar (turned out to be Mig19s more interested in their own bombing mission).

While first element held halfway to the target area, 2nd element investigated hot targets from the north. Gekko and Jules both hit the lead, and Jules splashed the wingman of the 2-ship.

Lead element spotted a pair of Q-5Ns to the north-east that were also hot. At this time, a pair of Mig-21s scrambled from Chuncheon (almost directly underneath Python5). Pegasus and Mango splashed one Q-5N each, while Mango was getting spiked by the Mig-21.

Gekko was called in to delouse Mango, but picked up some more distant Mig-29s. Gekko splashed both of the Mig-29s, but the Mig-21s shot down Mango. At about this time, Jules lost SA and got too low over an SA-15 and was also shot down.

I was trying to exit to the east to allow Hammer2 to delouse me, but one of the Mig-21s caught me and I went down too.

At this time Gekko was engaging another 2-ship of Q-5Ns and downed them both. Gekko then took down another IL-28 to the north-east before RTB.

Lessons learned. Better intel is required for the mission plan as we didn't know about the Mig-21s being at an airbase on our flight path, and they caused the most trouble.

Flight Role: SEAD/Escort

HAMMER21 "Noodle" AA=1 AG=4 RTB
HAMMER22 "Vosene" AA=2 AG=1 RTB

MS

After a RAT departure, we monitored picture calls on ingress, which were within 80NM, and saw PYTHON5 engaging threats.
We checked east to pump from west threat (Mig-19s), came back hot on a grinder but threat was no factor. #2 monitored until they started to track N,
splashed both.
We checked back on track to find Mig-21s sneaking behind PYTHON5, we helped as much as we could and asked PYTHON5 to come south fast for us to delouse.
Unfortunately the 21s tactic had worked.
PYTHON5 now singleton RTB, we took over the escort role and as picture was relatively clear, decided to push.
SA-15 became active during the previous engagement with the 21s and we managed to get a bullseye on it but kept pushing, saving this for later.
Picture was clear over target, with only AAA. We wrapped up with JAGUAR1 and magnumed on 2 fire cans and the SA-15 on the way back.
The plan was to drop a few CBUs on it but because of overcast, could not confirm position. 1xCBU was dropped on a AAA battalion just north of the FLOT.
Picture clear all the way back.
Uneventful egress and landing.

A few thoughts for the escort:
If deep strike with active airbases on the way, #1 and #2 should be MELD 80NM, with radar scanning from ground up at 35NM.
#3 and #4 MELD 40NM, with radar scanning at 15NM from ground up. Elements are 20NM apart. Anything that comes within should be picked up as priority threat.
If spiked close and SA is poor, entire flight should burn away from that threat while popping chaffs/flares at a regular interval.
The two elements can take different azimuths to force the bandits to chose, the element that is not spiked delouses the other.
If SA is still poor, bug out and call tumbleweed. The other flights will help you.
Escort flight should have any enemy airbase marked as PPT for better SA.
