NTO Polar Vortex V2.4

BMS 4.34.4

Objective: Strike Kuusamo Airbase

(VIPER2 - 2ship Escort)
BULLDOG5 - 4ship SEAD
SATAN6 - 4ship OCA Strike

Intel has informed us there has been plenty of activity at Kuusamo Airbase in the past 12h: cargos, helis, AN-50s along with Su-30/34 have been in and out.
Recon shows another opportunity to inflict some serious damage to their ground forces as well as destroying runway and other assets.
Intel has also mentioned the Kuusamo Chemical Plant just a few miles up the road (STP6) that would be a good secondary target.

SAM threat:
AAA over target
SA-10 43NM S of Kuusamo
2x SA-6 to be monitored on ingress and egress
Possible SA-8 and SA-17s

Red air is still active from the E and NE and we have to proceed carefully not end up surrounded.
Escort flight is optional

The weather is sunny all the way and back.

MS is for Kuusamo runway destroyed and Chemical plant damaged with no losses
PS is for Kuusamo runway destroyed and 1 loss

The plan was that I attacked SE targets at the airfield, Noodle would hit the chemical plant then join me at the airbase, hitting targets in the north west end. Fisty would go in after us and BLU the runway.

It went pear shaped slightly.

Ingress was good. Noodle was loaded with a AGM 154 A and C, the latter for the chemical plant. Unfortunately the SMS readout did not differentiate between the two and it was good fortune that he chose the right one during his attack. I had AGM 154 A versions on both pylons so didn't have that concern.

Just a side note. Wikepedia has the A variant costing $282,000 each and the C variant a mighty $719,012 each!

Bulldog 5 did a fine job keeping enemy aircraft off us, as did the mass of friendly aircraft around us.

The target steerpoints came up on me quicker than I thought. Bulldog said the SA-10 was quiet so we prosecuted the attack. Fisty went to low level to prepare his line up the runway attack while Noodle and I headed for the targets.

The JSOWs were efficiently deployed. The chemical plant was destroyed and many ground units (77 recorded) were killed at the airbase.

Almost concurrently, Fisty asked for help as he had SU-27 spikes on his RWR.

This is where it got screwy.

His contacts were 2 x SU-34. A glitch then occured as one of them stopped in mid-air and Fisty's BMS crashed. This was bad because now we couldn't kill the runway, our primary target.

I fired at one of the 34s but it was already dead by the time my slammer arrived, shot by Vosene.

Noodle was with me and we had another contact at 1000'. We approached and I confirmed they were enemy helicopters and disengaged. I turned hard to the west but Noodle carried on. My fault because I mustn't have given a clear instruction.

While all this was going on we were completely unaware of flying around inside an SA-6 and SA-17 threat zone. Luckily the SA-6 was quiet, but the SA-17 woke up when SAM Bait, I mean Noodle, flew over them. Consequently Noodle was shot down.

Fisty managed to reconnect and we flew back home for a perfect overhead break and landing.

Sorry Noodle.

Targets at the air base before we hit them...

...and what was left after our attack. Nice huh?

Flight Role: SEAD

Bulldog51 “Vosene” AA=2 AG=5 RTB
Bulldog52 “Pegasus” AA=0 AG=0 Tech
Bulldog53 “Mango” AA=0 AG=0 RTB
Bulldog55 “Gekko” AA=0 AG=3 RTB

Plan
Route to South of PPT63 AAA threat, engage SA-10 at PPT61 with JSOW and HARM if required. Clear out air threats and any pop-up AD threats that threaten OCA Strike. CAP East of target then rear guard for strike during RTB. Box formation 20nm separation.

Execution

Hot start for #2 meant he had to rejoin. During ingress picked up 2x Su-35 to NE near SA-17. Turned to engage but spiked by SA-17. Su-35s were being engaged by other friendlies so turned away and warned Strike to avoid. 1st element trespassed SA-10, which was not emitting. #1 fired JSOW, which destroyed launchers and Flaplid, knocking the SA-10 out of action. #1 also shot down an A-50 with a TOO Slammer C shot. #2 was unable to launch JSOW and came off cold. Second element requested to engage SA-10. #3 fired HARM, which missed and #4 fired JSOW, which hit the Big Bird search radar and more SA-10 launchers.

#1 and #2 now turned NE towards target while monitoring for threats. Requested to delouse Satan, engaged 2x Su-34. #1 engaged lead and splashed it with a Slammer C. #2 locked up trailer Su-34 and BMS locked up at the same time as Satan63. ACMI showed the Su-34 froze and not moving so some sort of glitch. #2 forced to exit and call a Tech.

#1 went East and turned back into threats, declare was for an Su-34 but turned out to be a helo. #1 engaged with a Slammer C but shot was trashed. SA-17 then lit up just North West of the Target. #1 directed 2nd element to engage and went defensive before turning back in hot and engaging with a HARM, shack on SA-17. #4 engaged with a HARM, also getting an SA-17. #3 engaged with JSOW but shot missed.

OCA Strike were now egressing and SEAD followed them back, uneventful egress and RTB with overhead break onto R19.

Overall a good mission with a lot going. Unfortunate that the mission outcome was influenced by technical issues.
