NTO Polar Vortex V2.4

BMS 4.34.4

Objective

We believe our Cyber attack team has managed to disable the SAM defences on the Kuznetsov Carrier group and we have a small window of opportunity to attack. 185th VFS are tasked with TASMO to destroy the Kuznetsov Carrier in the NE corner of the AO.

The carrier is still capable of launching aircraft that will pose a threat and the SAM systems may come back online at anytime. The package should plan the abort criteria and be prepared to swing role one of the TASMO flights to an Escort if deemed necessary.

The only target is the enemy carrier but intel has confirmed Kirov, Sovremenny and Osa II escorts.

Stp 4 & 9 are provided for refuelling as required. Each flight has a seperate tanker. An alt landing at Alta can be utilised in an emergency but every efforty should be made to refuel and land back at Heden so the aircraft can be quickly turned around for upcoming missions.

Package 2127
Banshee7 - TASMO 4x F-16C-50 Tanker Copper51 U13-359.650
Hawkeye1 - TASMO - 4x F-16C-50 Tanker Copper11 U251.075

Details of AD and Air threats are in the Strategic Brief.

MS: Kuznetsov sunk and max 1 loss from enemy action.

PS: At least 2 hits on the Kuznetsov and max 1 loss from enemy action.

HAWKEYE1 - TASMO
HAWKEYE11: "Noodle" AA=0 AG=0 EJT
HAWKEYE12: "Mango" AA=0 AG=0 RTB
HAWKEYE13: "Fisty" AA=0 AG=0 TECH

Plan:
Follow BANSHEE7, refuel, provide escort if required.

Execution:
Held under the cloud cover after take-off to boresight the mavericks and proceeded to climb to 28000.
#2 was not confident in AAR so he peeled off to the alternate while #1 tried to rejoin with BANSHEE7 for AAR.
There was confusion with tankers and #1 was on left wide observation with COPPER5-1 (at that time busy with F-18s) but could not see BANSHEE7 moving in. After calls on several tankers & TAC frequencies and #2 now taking off from Alta, #1 refuelled and caught up with #2. We proceeded to stp5 to hold.
Called again on VHF15-17 and UHF6 but got no reply.
Once #2 called joker I could hear something on VHF15 from BANSHEE but very hard to understand. Even switching to UHF6 comms were terrible.
Informed BANSHEE7 that due to #2 low on fuel we were proceeding to target.
Once we trespassed, we got mud spikes from all ships but did not get any other warnings. #2 identified the carrier and was cleared hot. Once dakota he proceeded straight back to Alta.
I could see small arm/AAA guns firing from the carrier and got too close. I completely misjudged distances and was not focused.

MS

Powered up AGM-65Gs on the ground and maintained 4000 feet to SP3 for boresiting below cloud cover.

Climbed to FL250 to refuelling at SP4. Difficulty was had finding the right tanker which cost us time (there were at least three).

After refuelling we climbed to conserve fuel and cut the corner to head towards the IP. I saw that Hawkeye 1 had gone done as we lost IDM, but our distance apart was so vast we couldn't speak to Mango in No2 to find out what happened until he was heading back our way.

At the IP we descended to FL160 but the clouds were too thick for us to see the target. Eventually dropping to around 6000 ft I found the carrier and fired both Maverics on the first pass scoring hits. No2 missed with his first shot and had to come around again. In the meantime the other four Mavs were launched by 3 and 4 with hits recorded. No2 came around and fired the last Mav about two minutes after the previous launch. That was the one that finished the Kusnetsov off.

We were not going to go through the fiasco of finding tankers again and I was critical on fuel so we diverted to the alternate, all landing safely. I ended up with 1600lbs of fuel left.

Mango in Hawkeye 12 was waiting for us and his perfect fuel management meant he only had 100lbs of fuel left! Excellent.

A long, two hour mission. Frustrating with the tankers but rewarding to see the carrier destroyed. Good effort by all.

I really enjoyed this mission. Not much in the way of enemy action apart from when we were near the enemy carrier but a very different challenge to our normal missions with the long duration, finding the right tanker, refueling and very careful fuel management for the whole mission including fuel calculations to ensure we made it back to the Alternate. The AAR and long duration adds an extra element of realism. Reminded me of the Kuwaiti Theatre deep strike missions we flew into Iraq.

I’d like to do more of these type of long duration missions in the future, not every week but maybe once a month or so where it fits the tactical scenario. Doesn’t have to be long distance as well. For example, could be a longer CAP mission where two flights/elements swap responsibilities where one group is AAR and the other is on the CAP. Do others want more of these longer duration missions as well?

Special thanks to Mango for staying on after his landing for the debrief while we RTB’d despite it being very late o’clock his time.
