After our successful BACAP defense it is time to turn the tables on the enemy.

We have a very small window to strike the enemy MiG-29S airbase and take it out of commission before they move additional Air Defense assets into the area.

2-ship OCA Strike against the airbase with a 4-ship SEAD Escort. Known threats include SA-10 at airbase and an SA-2 to the SW.

Strike flight need to use BLU-107, we need the airfield out for as long as possible and we won’t be able to get close enough to hit it again for some time due to increased Air Defence.

Falcon1 MS - Airfield 0% Operational. PS - Airfield 50% operational.

Gamble1 MS - No losses to Falcon1 from radar guided SAMs or enemy aircraft. PS - Maximum 1 loss to Falcon1 from radar guided SAMs or enemy aircraft.

Good luck!

OCA Strike

Falcon 11 "Griffin" AA=1 AG=3 EJT
Falcon 12 "Fisty" AA=0 AG=0 KIA

PS

Gamble were ahead of us to clear the way. We orbited at the edge of the SA-10 circle while an AA engagement took place. We were a little close to that one so we headed south somewhat. Fisty had a missile sent his way and he took evasive action consequently damaging his ground ordnance. More of that later.

The clearance was given to ingress and we descended to the deck at idle and 15 degrees down. We soon got spiked by the Fan Song so we used the hills to hide us.

The sort was done on the target pre-flight and I dropped my bombs successfully. Fisty's bombs were U/S and did not release. So only 50% success.

Coming over and off the target we took plenty of AAA and small arms fire towards us. Fisty was hit and lost his MFD's. I gave him directions to get safe as we went around the SA-2. Vosene asked if we could help with some MiGs and that he would drag them to us. Fisty stayed out of it at low level. Then his controls died and his plane nose dived. KIA.

I climbed to assist Vosene and Reds and shot down the MiG 29A chasing Reds but not before he was shot down and I was ambushed by two more MiGs on my six, so I hit the silk.

An interesting mission plagued by some technicalities, especially IDM not doing what it was supposed to, but fun overall.

SEAD/Escort

Gamble11 "Noodle" AA=4 AG=0 EJT
Gamble12 "Mango" TECH
Gamble13 "Vosene" AA=1 AG=2 RTB
Gamble14 "Reds" AA=2 AG=0 EJT

PS

The plan was to have the two elements separated by 10NM, Gamble11 and 12 targeting the SA-10 while Gamble13 and 14 monitored the west flank for possible Mig-23s. As Mango had tech issues shortly after joining I decided to keep 12 as AI to use it against the SA-10. Entering the SA-10 WEZ we picked up a group of Mig-29 hot, AI wingman went mental on VHF and after turning cold and requesting a change to VHF17 there was a bit of confusion between the two elements. Second element quickly turned in hot and engaged the hostile group. AI got shot down and Gamble11 turned back hot after 13 requested a delouse.

Situation was back under control and 11 took the first two shots at the SA-10, both tracked and veeered off course at the last moment. SA-2 and SA-3 remained quiet. 13 was cleared to engage the SA-10. while turning cold 11 picked up 2 groups of Mig-23s and requested 14 in support. 11 fired a fox3 medium and turned cold, 14 remained cold. Both elements now cold and 13 requesting a delouse 11 turned back in, dispatched 1 last Mig and was shot down.

From Gamble13

After being cleared in hot to engage SA-10 Gamble 13 fired 1x HARM from 45nm high and fast. Shack on Flaplid.

Cold from SA-10, Gamble11 called a group of 4x MiG-23 hot to our NW. With the bandits within 15nm and #1 hot, #3 turned hot and engaged the left two MiG-23 at approximately 8nm, resulting in 1x splash before turning cold again. Reviewing ACMI #3 fired 2x shots at same bandit, sorting error. Throughout this time #4 had continued cold.

Whole flight was now cold with 2x MiG-23 hot. #3 requested Delouse, spiked with a MiG-23 at his 6 at 5nm. #4 or Falcon1 was best placed to Delouse and it was a tactical error for #1 to turn back hot who was parallel with #3. He splashed 1x 23 but was shot down. #3 ended up merged with the remaining MiG and went Cat 1. 2 circle BFM down to low level, #1 was offensive when #4 had the shot and splashed last 23 with 2x Slammer. The engagement should not have played out like this. Gamble1 became task focused on SA-10 and did not monitor air picture effectively, allowing the MiG-23 to get well inside commit range undetected.

Low on fuel and with 3x Slammer remaining Gamble1 called Falcon1 clear to Target while setting up a CAP to South. SA-10 was still showing on RWR and spiking but this was Big Bird search Radar only. No 10 symbol in HAD over target confirmed Flaplid was destroyed. In retrospect, it took far too long to destroy the Flaplid. An SDB engagement against this known static target would have been more effective and quicker.

Gamble1 monitored 4-ship MiG-29 group to South while Falcon1 attacked.

MiG-29A group turned hot and Gamble1 committed. 3 and 4 fired 3x Slammer for 1x kill by Gamble14 but he was shot down in process. Now Winchester and fuel critical, Gamble13 dragged MiGs towards Falcon1. Unfortunately Falcon12 had sustained damaged and was destroyed just before engagement. Falcon11 managed to shoot down 1x MiG-29A but was shot down in the process. One of the remaining MiG-29A broke off to the North having been damaged by a shot from Gamble13. The remaining MiG-29A chased Gamble13, who had now turned South, for about 45nm before finally breaking off the pursuit. Again this engagement had several learning points, respecting MAR, comms between flights, Gamble1 passing picture and Falcon1 to communicate flight status earlier.

Gamble13 was down to 600lbs of fuel and managed an emergency landing at home plate.

A tense mission with several good learning points.

ACMI is available for download in TS backup debrief channel.

According to the ACMI, Fisty's Durandals did release, and were on target.

Those Mig29s at the end were nasty :)
