It was obvious from planning that timing was going to be a major factor in this mission, our plan was to perform a high altitude LGB drop on each of the hangers in as short of a window as possible so we can RTB ASAP.

We taxi/taken off asap to minimize time.. luckily we had our airbase to ourselves so that saved a lot of time getting airborne. We then climbed to A25 as fast as possible so we could cruise before caret the rest of the way to target. As we approached the target area Chalis called out bandits inbound from the target area.. the majority of these were splashed quickly by the other flights, we were vectored a new heading from Chalis and at some point we had a 29 spike off to our 7-8 o clock. We knew from the broadcast comms that this aircraft was tied up so we outran the contact as any orbits could have meant mission failure. Shortly after Chalis advised us to Orbit whilst an SA-2 was being dealt with, I had got a bit ahead of the flight at this point so I rejoined the rest of flight which bought enough time for the SA-2 to have been destroyed. At this point we were just slightly behind on caret so we had to up the speed slightly as we were approaching the target. All bombs were dropped and destroyed the designated hangers with little resistance, on egress after the drop we strayed into an SA-3 as we made a hard left turn for home plate all missiles were defeated and we continued to RTB without any further issues.

SEAD and Escort flights did a good job of getting us to target, and all our targets were destroyed within a 30 second window so it was a good job all around.

If I was to refly the mission again I'd have probably dropped from a higher altitude with a bit more speed, the extra range on the LGB's would have given us enough space to turn without straying into the SA-3 zone.

Good Mission Griffindor!. Having to push into a hot target area was a good twist the mission probably would have played out a lot different without the time constraints.

If I was to refly the mission again I'd have probably dropped from a higher altitude with a bit more speed, the extra range on the LGB's would have given us enough space to turn without straying into the SA-3 zone.

I did the exact opposite thing :)
Mid-low level approach and visual CCIP drop, SA3 never fired on me.

An actual RL approach on those kind of setups whould be TFR, loft the bomb CCIP, and reverse course lasing. Unfortunately in AF laser could not track targets at the back of the aircraft, and i wouldn't want to try and see if that was fixed on BMS on a Sunday mission :)

Given the SA-3 can only track 1 target at a time you were most likely never fired upon as you were the last one over target and the SA-3 was already engaging us at the time :(.. your a lot more experienced than I am so I'm asking to learn from you but can you explain why you decided to use a low/mid alt approach against a SAM that was typically designed for engaging low altitude targets?

How far the SA3 was from the target I agree a full NOE approach would have meant we would have been out of range of the SA3 but a mistimed CCIP drop could have meant a full MS was impossible which I saw as unnecessary risk to take.. so thought it would be wise to make good use of the laser. I'm aware these are big hangers so its unlikely a CCIP drop could miss which is perfectly fine decision in this case.

I'll test out the loft method and report back.

In the CCRP+ risk losing laser track because of a SAM launch Vs CCIP on a Predefined Target (piper on the Steerpoint scenario) i chose the latter.
I didn't know the single aircraft track of the SA3, something new learned today. I prefer CCIP + low level attack when in SAM range. A/G is not my specialty, GBU's might be accurate enough to hit hangars even when lasing has been disrupted. having no definite knowledge to make that call, CCIP seemed a lot more on the safe side in terms of accuracy.

There is no dilema here about which tactic was right or wrong. We all hit the target, we all got back in one piece, both tactics worked.

Yep, perfectly valid method in that case if its your preference. I wasn't questioning any rights or wrongs just looking to expand my knowledge for any future missions, Thanks for your input Dmans :)

Better late than never, I just want to say I quite enjoyed this easter themed mission.

Also got a warm fuzzy feeling as I managed to stay glued to my lead all the way.
