Your targets this time out see you returning to the northern tips of the island to engage with massed troops and resources that are awaiting deployment.

In addition to the same target that was attack last time, there are more troops slightly to the west. both of these shall be attacked.

Thanks to an earlier top drawer attack, all three of the enemy air bases in the SE of the peninsula are out of action. Consequently, the number of enemy aircraft is expected to be lower. It should be noted that there are still plenty of enemy air assets available.

The above image shows the combined routes of the two AI flights.
Package 969
Viper 3 is to attack zone A
Weasel 3 is to attack zone B
Warhawk is to act primarily in an escort role with options for DEAD available to them.

A flight of F-35s shall be capping east of the escort flights route.

Mission success is for 60 kills across the AI flights for a maximum of one loss.
Partial success will be given for 40 kills across both AI flights and one loss.

Good Hunting.

Flight role: ESCORT
Warhawk31 "Pegasus" AA=1 TECH
Warhawk32 "Vosene" AA=1 TECH

Mission abandoned due to tech issues with host.

We decided to take a 2-ship escort and have a 3-ship and 2-ship AI flights for the respective attack areas.

I took the first hot-leg of the CAP with Vosene in 10 mile trail. On arrival in the CAP area, a furball was detected about 20nm NW of the AI attack boxes. AI flights were instructed to hold position safely to the south. I isolated and fired on a Mig25 at 15nm (only damaged).

I turned cold and Vosene was hot on the engagement area. Vosene picked up another Mig25 from the west who was showing interest in chasing me. Vosene fired on the Mig25 at 15nm - kill.

By now Vosene was on the cold leg and I had turned hot again with Vosene getting Mig29 and Mig25 spikes from 5-7 o'clock. I fired on the nearest Mig25 at 22nm and killed it. As I was turning east for the cold leg, Vosene reported another Mig25 spike from the eastern area. I picked it up and fired on it but F15s got there first.

At this point the mission host had a BMS-freeze and that was all.

The re-run:

Flight role: ESCORT
Warhawk31 "Pegasus" AA=4 RTB
Warhawk32 "Vosene" AA=3 RTB

As above to start with - all quiet until Vosene remarked on how quiet it was ...

I turned to the NNE (intended axis of the CAP) and picked up a pair of Mig29s just north of the target area, and another pair of Mig25s further off to the northeast, both hot. I engaged the Mig29 pair with one slammer each, and was quickly defensive to a launch from the Mig25 pair (R-40R). Upon reviewing the ACMI, there was an R-77 inbound from the Mig29s as well - no warning was received for this launch. I easily evaded these by turning aggressively cold, and Vosene was 10nm behind me on the hot leg. Both Mig29s went down from my slammers.

Vosene fired on one of the Mig25s (the pair had bracketed quite wide) but only damaged it. Mig25s seem to be quite tough to kill. This Mig25 did seem to be out of the fight at least, and was cleaned up later by AI. The other Mig25 from the pair fired an R-40R at Vosene and he turned defensive to easily defeat the missile.

At this point I called to Viper3 and Weasel3 to remain at safe distance as we were defensive to both Mig29s and 25s, and in a 5nm combat spread, Vosene east and me west. I turned hot first and picked up the Mig25, that had fired on Vosene, and fired at 10nm. I cranked left as the Mig25 was flanking to my right and the Mig25 went down.

I turned cold again and got a bit too low and too close to some SA15s on the west coast. I got fired on at about 19,000 feet but was able to defeat it by climbing away.

Vosene was hot again and had found another pair of Mig29s (probably 2nd element from earlier engagement). Vosene fired at 20nm and 16nm and cranked right before turning cold. Both Mig29s went down to Vosene's slammers.

At this point we had been pushed well south of the CAP area so Viper3 and Weasel3 still had to hold.

As Vosene was cold from the Mig29 engagement, I turned east to investigate some Mig25 spikes. There was a pair of Mig25s that split into a bracket, one going SE and the other NW.

I focused on the one going SE to prevent it getting around us and south. I got dragged quite a bit and by the time I was able to fire, the other Mig25 had come around behind me.

I should have dropped the eastern Mig25 and turned to engage the one to my north. In the end, I splashed my target, and Vosene got the one on my tail.

That was the end of the air threats (for the mission it turned out) so the strike package was called in to the target area.

We returned for an overhead break. Initially there were some F35s declaring emergency. I pushed on with the overhead break hoping that the way would be clear by the time we arrived. Keeping an eye out visually meant that I got behind with the standard approach admin. We extended long on the downwind leg to give some separation from the F35s on final. Weasel3 also flew overhead as we were on final. We didn't hear anything about Weasel3's approach until comms from the tower. We actually hadn't been cleared to land ourselves by tower so we re-entered the pattern now behind Weasel3. We landed in behind Weasel3, dodging a bit of flaming wreckage on the runway in the process :)

Lessons learned.
1: When on a 2-ship escort, it is even more important than usual to stay in mutual support. I left Vosene behind in the last Mig25 engagement and put myself in unnecessary danger.
2: When approaching for landing in a lot of traffic, fuel allowing, give yourself some room and time to make things less fraught.

Ingress with slow climb to A23 with hard deck set at A22 due to SA-15 and other ground threats.
Proceeded to target area (west of target box) and sorted targets.
#1 was able to release all weapons and went straight A-A as Warhawk3 was RTB.
#2 was focused on the wrong target (columns around W SA-15) but managed to drop weapons after a few passes, proving that JSOWs are also pretty darn efficient as dumb bombs :)

He was asked to start heading home with Warhawk3 after calling bingo.
#3 managed to release 3 JSOWs after few dry passes but broke the hard deck, fortunately he was able to come back up with no scratches. With no more time for 4th JSOWs to be released, we RTBd and rejoined with #2 for OHB on RWY 12.
Unfortunately, #3 had a mishap on final due to asymmetric loadout but was able to eject.

Reminder on comms:
No need to acknowledge navigation calls made on VHF by flight lead (pushing freq, stp ref, speed/altitude/bearing calls); if confirmation is required, lead will ask flight to do so:
#1: “1 is reference stp3, 300kts, passing A12”
#2,#3: no reply needed.
-----------
#1: “1 is reference stp3. 2 & 3 reference stp2”
#2: “2”
#3: “3”
