29th January 1991, 0418 local.

Last-minute intel:
We've had several reports that red air is planning strikes along the coast on major assets incl. Ras Mishab and Ras Safaniya. They might even be on their way. As a result, all flights inbound/outbound of Ras Safaniya have been diverted/canceled and we have been temporarily transferred to the 614th (Block 30) at Ras Tanura (100NM further down the coast).

MUSTANG1 and SATAN1 are tasked with 2xBARCAP from 0500 to 0545 providing a 60NM W-E shield. F-14s and F-15s are also operating in the same AO.

CAP Positions

Enemy SAM coverage is light but be aware of possible MANPAD defences.
Friendly coverage of Hawk, Skyguard and Patriot.

Red air:
MiG-29A, MiG-23, MiG-21, Mirage F1EQ
MiG-27, Su-20, Su-22, Su-24M, Su-25

MS - No losses - On station from 0500 to 0545.
PS - One loss - On station from 0500 to 0545.

Role - BARCAP

Satan11 “Vosene” AA=2 AG=0 RTB
Satan12 “Mango” AA=0 AG=0 RTB
Satan13 “Reds” AA=0 AG=0 RTB

MS

Plan

Two flights, two BARCAPS. Satan1 on right, Mustang1 on left. Both orientated NW-SE.
For Satan1 20nm separation between first element and #3.
Loadout was 4x AIM-120B due to shortages and 2x AIM-9M with wing bags. No TGP and no IFF on Block 30.

Execution

Good ramp but during ingress #4 AI kept giving same call all the time on VHF jamming the channel. Rolled to V17 from V15 but #2 had a different present frequency so took time to resolve. Flight were nearly on CAP by time it was sorted.

Lesson- Ensure all flights in package have a pre-briefed VHF backup channel in case of issues on primary VHF. This should be covered during comms brief and frequency for backup channel confirmed by everyone in Flight.

Arriving on CAP there were multiple contacts to the North but they hadn’t yet met the Commit criteria so #1 and #2 turned cold with #3 hot. 3 was unable to get confirmation of hostile so also turned cold..

The bandits were now very close to #3 but being engaged by an F-15A. #1 ensured #3 was deloused, pressing to the merge just as the last bandit was splashed by the F-15.

#1 and #2 were now cold with #3 hot and sorting on a pair of MiG-29A in trail who were threatening Mustang1 as they were busy engaging MiG-21. #3 engaged lead bandit from 26nm with a low Pk shot but missile was defeated by a break turn. #3 went cold while #1 and #2 went hot, although #2 was several miles trail. #1 took a shot from 12nm as the bandit turned cold but the bandit turned back into the missile and it was splashed. The other MiG was splashed by an AI.

#2 now joined #3 as the closer aircraft with #1 operating as the Singleton. #3 and #2 committed on a group at 25nm but were unable to engage as it was a mixed friendly bandit group. They turned cold and #1 fired at a MiG-21 from 15nm that was chasing #2 but the bandit managed to drag the missile out, with the missile only missing by 1,000ft from the enemies six, so close! #1 pressed on the bandit but got a call from Mustang 12 that he was engaging the same bandit so #1 dropped and sanitized to the North. The bandit was eventually defeated by an AI sneaking in ahead of Mustand 12.

#1 picked up a 2-ship bogey group and handed them over to Mustang1 as they entered their AO. These later turned out to be Su-25.

The flight continued on CAP with #2 and #3 hot when they picked up another 2-ship Su-25. They committed and #3 fired at 20nm just as the bandit turned cold and the shot was defeated. #1 instructed #2 to turn hot and engage the Su-25 but then at least 6 enemy groups popped up from the North and hot. Enemy included 21, 23 and 29A. #2 fired 2x Slammer at a MiG-21 hot from 20nm but weirdly both shots were defeated by a small turn from the MiG, very strange behavior. #2 turned cold while #1 deloused getting one MiG-21 off his tail with a Slammer that missed and splashing the other chasing Mig-21 with another Slammer that was followed up with a heater for good measure.

#1 was now defensive having been fired on by trail group of 29A so #3 deloused #1 with 2x Slammer shots. Although both missed it gave #1 time to extend. The whole flight was now defensive so #1 requested delouse from Mustang1 who took up the fight while Satan1 successfully RTB’d due to low fuel.

Mustang1 completed the CAP with no losses for a mission success and no damage to any friendly airbases.

A great mission with good coordination both intro and inter flight but the Slammer behavior needs investigating further.

Role - BARCAP

Mustang11 “Griffin” AA=0 AG=0 RTB
Mustang12 “Noodle” AA=0 AG=0 RTB

MS

Good ramp start and ingress. Set up a CAP with 15 mile spacing. Most of the action was on the eastern CAP but we had some interest when trying to find out if two SU-25s (as they turned out to be) were enemy as we kept getting bogey calls. We engaged them, Noodle damaging one and off they ran.

The rest of the mission was spent keeping an eye to the north and supporting Satan 1 when needed.

Noodle refuelled on the way back and we both landed safely.

Busy evenings work.

I have been playing around with actively managing a campaign and it should be possible. I have done it in vanilla KTO, but haven't tried it yet in Kuwait.

I have also found out how to redeploy Patriot air defense battalions to much more useful areas. Again, I am not sure if this would be needed/relevant for Kuwait.
