AAR Pre-Reading/Training Material

BMS 4.34 Training Manual V1.2 Pages 54-58. Training Mission 5 AAR.

quote:
Before taking fuel you will need to establish a stable pre-contact position. This position needs to be held for a few seconds to be recognised by the boomer. You'll need to be 50 feet below at 30° down from the tanker. The best method to get that position correctly is to use the gun cross and the boom. The position of the boom tip gives you the location of the pre- contact position. Just follow the lower part of the boom by aligning the gun cross with it. The HUD side mounts are also a good cue. Align them with the engines of the refueller (inboard engines for the KC-135).
quote:
You must tell the tanker that you are done refuelling. Use the Tanker menu: ‘y 3’ ‘Done Refuelling’. This removes your aircraft from the queue; only after you have done this will the tanker clear your wingmen to pre-contact.

BMS Dash-1 Change 2.00 Pages 173-181
quote:
...Quick Flow procedures have been implemented for both AI and humans to expedite air refuelling operations. Quick Flow allows receivers to minimise refuelling time with maximum fuel transfer. The receiver flight will join on the left of the tanker with the flight lead moving to the pre-contact position. Remaining aircraft will proceed to the left observation position. Once the flight lead commences refuelling, the second aircraft in the air refuelling sequence should move to the On- Deck position.

The On-Deck position is normally flown as a route (left echelon) formation with approximately 10 feet spacing from the refuelling aircraft. The third and fourth receivers will remain in the observation left position.

When the lead jet completes refuelling it calls done on the radio (y 3) and moves to an observation position off the tanker’s right wing. Tanker ownership in multiplayer automatically transfers to the second receiver (if he is human). This can result in a noticeable ‘jump’ of the tanker as you take over multiplayer ownership of it.

The second receiver moves from the On-Deck position to the pre-contact or contact position as directed by the tanker (if the On-Deck formation was being flown correctly he would be cleared straight to contact).

The third receiver (if present) then moves to On-Deck and waits for the second to call done refuelling to follow the tanker direction to refuel. The left to right flow continues until all fighters have refuelled.

Additional receivers arriving prior to the first flight completing refuelling operations will remain in trail position until there is space at the left tanker observation position. There will only be a maximum of three jets waiting at left observation (including the On-Deck spot) at any one time any others waiting will be in trail until there is room for them to move up.

MS

Plan
Operate in Elements with 1st Element engaging PPT 58 (SA-2) and 2nd Element engaging PPT 59 (SA-4). Either element to engage PPT 56 (SA-2) and PPT 57 (SA-3). Plan was not to engage SAMs immediately but to find out how they operated in 4.34.

Execution
Lost #2 on take-off to a tail strike. #1 refragged 2nd Element as lead for engagements of PPT 58 and PPT 59. #1 was hit by an SA-4 but did not get a launch or lock warning. Final result was 3x SAM radars hit, 2x SA-2 and 1x SA-3. 2nd Element RTB'd.

Observations

SA-2
Locked and fired shortly after Trespass.
Turned off quickly after first missile defeated.
Intermittently turned on radar and engaged. Due to only engaging one target at a time, hunter-killer tactics worked well against this threat.

SA-3
Locked up quickly and fired. Turned off more frequently but overall not significantly different behaviour to 4.33.

SA-4
Did not fire at all when Trespassing. Only engaged when Flight turned cold.
After the SAM was fired at, turned off for several minutes, lead the Flight to believe it had been destroyed.
Launched again when Flight was cold.
SAM not showing as active when other aircraft in Flight being launched at.
Not all missile launches shows an RWR spike in targeted aircraft or gave a launch warning.
Some evidence to support destroying search radar is a valid tactic to force use of track radar.
More investigation required on this SAM.

SA-6
Not engaged.

Flight Role: SEAD
Viper11: "Sabre" AA=0 AG=2 RTB
Viper12: "Mango" AA=0 AG=2 RTB
Viper13: "Griffin" AA=1 AG=1 RTB
Viper14: "Seeker" AA=1 AG=0 RTB

Planned to fly as 2 elements with element 1 Sabre and Mango engaging the SA-2's to the west and north west of the SAM group. Mango was tasked with destroying the first SA-2 to clear a path through to the SA-6 for element 2.

During the engagements I only remember one SA-2 turning red and actively tracking, for the most part, the enemy radars didn't actively track.

Mango fired his Harm and was fired upon by an SA-4 which missed. Sabre continued to his target the SA-2 and fired his Harm, 3 SA-2 missiles were launched at him. Having fired both Harms at radar sites in the target area we moved South.

Griffin and Seeker proceeded to attack their targets, Griffin fires a Harm and receives a SA-2 launch in return. Griffin fires 2nd Harm. 1 ground target is destroyed. Whilst circling, a pair of Mig 21's approached from the west.

Griffin and Seeker turned to engage, from the tape, they executed a very nice bracket intercept on the Migs, Griffin destroyed the leader and Seeker destroyed the 2nd.

Uneventful flight home, but Seeker ran into a problem and crashed which also crashed the server.

Good work by Griffin and Seeker in that air to air engagement.

Sabre
No fences were harmed during this sortie.
