Key learning points

Airfield Navigation was an issue again for some of Flight. Set HSI to take-off runway heading, combine with compass, airfield diagram and signage for airfield orientation.

I recommend having the KTO interactive map open on a different device so you can quickly pull up airfield diagrams, approach and departure plates etc.

Formation Integrity is critical to achieving the mission. As wingman do not accept deviation from your assigned position, fight to get back there. Remember ABC is the order to get back into formation, correct Altitude then correct Bearing then correct Closure. Once in formation maintain your position, using either reference points on the Lead aircraft for close formations or visual position relative to your aircraft (eg my 3 o’clock), size of aircraft to help judge distance, IDM and TCN for larger distance formations such as Combat Spread. Set your distance using IDM/TCN to start with and note the size of the Lead aircraft and what features you can make out. Once you learn this “sight picture” you’ll know when you’re at the correct distance without even referencing IDM or TCN.

Element Formation Integrity is also critical for mutual support. As the trail element maintain the correct spacing and make sure you are hot as the engaged element is turning cold so you have picture.

Sorting was generally much better this week. Sort gameplan was covered in brief e.g. lead element takes first two hot aircraft, second element takes next two etc. Wingman sorts on aircraft on his side of formation if separated in azimuth or trailer if separated in Range. This significantly reduced in-flight comms. When sort broke down it had a direct impact on engagement outcome. Remember, as a wingman, if you can’t sort let Lead know eg “#2 not sorted”. Remember you can use IDM to help sort. If Lead is sorted on one of the two hot aircraft just sort on the other. No comms are required to achieve this.

RESPECT THE MAR We say this every week and even during the engagements but people still get target fixation especially when trying to get a shot off and get too close.

Turn cold by the MAR. Even if you don’t have a shot away, you’ll avoid getting shot down. While you’re still flying the flight can kill the enemy through mutual support. Get shot down and we lose both mutual support and the weapons you are carrying. 2 of the 3 aircraft shot down this week were directly attributable to getting target fixation and pushing inside the MAR when there was no need to.

If you have a lock you have target range in the bottom right of your HUD but be careful if this isn’t the closest aircraft. Also use your radar and HSD to judge MAR. As a wingman if your Lead is cold and you’re still hot you’ve screwed the pooch and need to turn cold and rejoin your Lead immediately, regardless if you have a shot away or not.

Finally, remember the quickest way to reverse direction provided you have the Altitude is a Split-S. If you have a shot away you should already be putting the target at Gimbals to reduce closure and a nose low slice from there at MAR will be all that is required to get cold.

Comms Discipline Comms were better during this flight but still became saturated at times. If one element is engaged the other element should minimize Comms unless you have crucial information to pass. Don’t jam up Comms with element formation stuff, your wingman should know where he has to be, his primary job is to stay in formation. As a Wingman, use the information at your disposal such as visual, TCN and IDM for altitude and position information rather than requesting this over Comms.
