185th VFS – RUSSIAN BEAR 2018 – Mission 4 “THE WILD ROVANIEMI”
Following the recent harassment of allied flights by Russian Mig29 Interceptors from Rovaniemi Airbase, Command has decided that in order to allow freedom of movement in the south-eastern AO, this base is to be put out of action.
The images below show the flightplan of the OCA Strike Flight (Cowboy1), recent aerial photography of the airbase and an intelligence plot of nearby threats to the package
Intelligence is aware of at least 1 AAA Bn in the town to the Southeast of Rovaniemi Airbase and there is a strong likelihood that the base is also covered by a SA-10 Bn to the south and also, possibly to the east. Falcon1 (SEAD Escort) is to factor this, as well as the potential for unknown “pop-up” SAM threats when deciding on loadout.
PACKAGE 9868
The package will consist of a 4* OCA STR, a 4* SEAD ESC and a 4* ESCORT. Specific targets for the OCA STR are:
PRIMARY : Runway Segments
SECONDARY: Ammo Dump

On ingress we spotted a hostile group that we assumed to be a ground strike. We ignored them and they turned cold. 2nd Element engaged and destroyed the Southern SA-10 Flap Lid.
As we left the Patriot ring, we found several groups of fighters. We called for COWBOY to launch their JASSMs from inside the Patriot, we killed a few and retreated.
After a few minutes the picture cleared and we proceeded to our NE CAP point and looked for SEAD targets, we found none but did find more fighters. 2nd element came heads-up, we set up a grinder, and finished them off. 2nd element put their remaining HARMs on AAA targets and we RTBd. |

We had set the point when to launch our weapons at the engagement circle of a friendly Patriot, approx. 50nm from target. Close to that point we launched and were asked to regroup with friendly SAM coverage.
We picked up several bandit groups, but engagement was difficult because of too many friendlies intercepting already.
