THE FINAL PUSH!

Pacific Command has revealed the underlying objective to this 4 day war: Hoeyang is the development center for the DPRK nuclear miniaturization effort. It is imperative that we capture Hoeyang intact, extract all materials, research artifacts, and scientists (some of whom may be non-DPRK) before they can disseminate/disappear.

The offensive operation to capture Hoeyang is progressing well; within a few hours, we expect to capture Hoeyang and end this conflict. Ground commanders report that a TOWED AAA battalion is occupying the 2nd Arty Corp base and is well supplied. This battalion is harassing supply and MEDEVAC choppers supporting our advancing troops and poses a threat to the removal of the nuclear materials mentioned above. We are tasked to destroy these troops.

We now know that the Toksan airbase is functional, but we still can’t assess the strength of squadrons based there.
This is a night mission and weather conditions have finally improved.

The package will consist of 3 flights: 2 INTERDICTION, and 1 SWEEP/ESCORT – objectives are:

  • AVENGER1 and PANTHER2 – Destroy the AAA battalion --Departs from the 912th @ Yeoncheon TO= 0326 & 0327– Push STP3 - 0339 @ FL22 & FL20 -- Payload is free = currently loaded with ROCKEYEs

  • PYTHON2 – Provide air cover for the package --Departs from the 911th @ Chongju TO= 0325 – Push STP -0338 @FL27

Interdiction flight leads must plan to execute their mission with a 40 minute station time. There are 26 units and 48 bombs fragged. If all units are destroyed, both flights get beers at the O Club. This should be attacked as an organized, 8-ship, wheel (adjusted for # of seated aircraft), with a goal for 6 passes MAX per pilot. We feel the campaign will be won by 0450, so we MUST execute our mission and be egressing by 0440, with a planned recovery NLT 0450. If successful, a Korean Campaign Medal may be waiting.

Mission success:

AVENGER1 & PANTHER2: 75% units hit for ordnance expended.

PYTHON2: no losses from enemy air.

IDM and TACAN are per SOP

Took off, and got to stpt3, made the call on tactical that the picture was clear and we were proceeding towards the CAP area.

A bit later we had incoming jamming contacts, which we commited on. Unfortunately, neither me nor Zipgun could get a burn-through. We turned called, #1 heading south and #2 heading east, with the intention that the bandits would choose one of us and the other guy could turn back hot.

We both kept being locked up so at that time, looking at the picture, seeing Panther heading north, we asked them to delouse, since I was dragging the hostiles towards them. Panther engaged them, I was missile defensive, and upon trashing the missile turned back hot. In this 1st engagement we lost Hazza though.

Afterwards, we had incoming F18s, which #2 engaged, then as he was turning cold, I also fired upon. Unfortunately, I dropped lock and one F18 managed to escape.

While turning back hot after this engagement I picked up an F16 coming hot, from west, and took him out, and then monitored another F18, without knowing it was the 2nd engagement's survivor.

When he become a factor, though, Homer was in a better possitions to take him out, so I dropped him.

Afterwards, the picture was clear, with Zipgun and Homer CAPing while I did I hotpit refuel, Zipgun himself having done that before.

Very exciting mission, I enjoyed it.

Ingressed as fragged to just beyond STP 3, then we were told to hold at 3 as Panther were engaged with a flight of f-16s to the North. We turned cold back to STP 3, then heard Python requested to support Panther. We held off for quite some time and it was starting to look like we would have to abort because of fuel, but then we were called hot. Knight stripped low and fast at 30 miles short of target and the rest of us mere mortals held until he was 10 miles from target, then we too pressed in 5 mile trail. Knight executed a pop-up, called shack on the Firecan and scrammed to STP 7 at fragged Alt. The rest of us expended our Mavs with 2 passes and then I called Knight back in hot to expend his 2 remaining CBUs.
Uneventful egress, apart from Knight going fuel critical (I think he landed with 1,400 lbs). We executed a straight in approach with Knight touching down first, followed by trhe rest of us. A good mission, well executed with really great flying skills from the whole flight.

On the ingress we were called to assist Pythons, during which time Hazza bought it. After seeing off the enemy fighters, and given I was reduced to a one-ship, I got the Mavs off as quick as possible (mixed results) and joined the CAP.

Destroyed a second Hornet later in the mission, before RTB with Pythons to the split point, went to Yechon and did an overhead with flares for anyone at the base who might have been watching.

Looking forward to redeploying to Israel!
