Today we start on a new campaign in the Balkans. Our first foray into enemy territory shall be to attack the Podgorica South Factory.

There is limited SAM and AAA defence at the moment, in the form of SA-3 and AAA.

Air threats are low at present but the escort flight shall need to be alert and focused.

Lobo 2 of the 22nd squadron, shall take off from Casale AB while Fury 2 and Falcon 2 of the 77th squadron take off from Palese airport.

Package 16352
Falcon 2 is a four ship strike flight. MS is for the factory and processor at Podgorica South Factory to be destroyed. PS will be awarded if the factory is destroyed.

Fury 2 is the four ship escort and Package Commander, tasked to protect the strike flights.
IDA will be from this flight.
MS no AA losses to the strike flights, PS one loss to the strike flight.

Lobo 2 is a four ship SEAD flight. MS is no radar SAM or radar AAA losses to the package, PS is a maximum of one similar loss.

Timings
TO for Falcon 2 is 07:23:30hrs with PP at 07:40:36 at FL220. IDM 1, VHF 1, tacan 11/74
TOT for Falcon 2 is 07:46hrs at FL180.
TO for Fury 2 is 07:21hrs with PP at 07:38 at FL250. IDM 2, VHF 2, tacan 16/79
TO for Lobo 2 is 07:24:30hrs with PP at 07:38 at FL240. IDM 3, VHF 3, tacan 21/84

Flight path is fixed for mutual support.

The weather is still fair at home plates and sunny at the target but this weather system is moving SE with more storms coming in from the north. Choose your weapons accordingly.

Good Hunting

MS

We took off 1 min ahead, we turned cold when we got spiked by the first SA3. Lobo pressed and took out the first SA3 and after that we engaged a group coming from NE, then another singleton also from NE. In the process of doing so, we got spiked by the SA2 E of target and turned cold and got out.

By that time, it became clear that the strike flight was down and we returned to base.

Flight Role: SEAD ESCORT
Lobo21: "Griffin" AA=1 AG=1 RTB
Lobo22: "Zohrs" AA=0 AG=3 RTB
Lobo23: "Homer" AA=0 AG=0 RTB

MF

Took off and boresighted the Maverics before heading to the target. Zohrs was tasked to get the northern Sa-3, which he did. He asked permission to take out an Sa-6 to the north of that Sa-3. I agreed. In reflection I should have asked him to rejoin.

Meantime Homer and I headed to the target. I killed the Sa-3 at the target and called the strike flight in. I then turned with Homer to search for the SA-6. I fired at it but my HARM missed. We thought there was another SA-6 somewhere, but the ACMI showed that it was the same solitary SA-6 and it duly shot Homer down. We tried to find it with Maverics but to no avail.

We ended up with a mission failure, not only because we didn't kill that pesky SA-6 but because Falcon 2 turned into the threat area after dropping their bombs. Nothing we could do about that.

On the way back we engaged two OSA IIs, killing one and damaging the other. I believe our warping had something to do with the lack of a kill from me. The ACMI shows my missile doing a merry dance before missing the target.

An enjoyable albeit frustrating mission.

Flight Role: STRIKE
Falcon21: "Fisty" AA=0 AG=1 EJT
Falcon22: "Mango" AA=0 AG=0 KIA

PS

Ingressed as fragged in Loose Spread at 22'000. Held at the coast, feet wet until cleared forward by Lobo 2 after the SA-3 at Tgt was destroyed.

We were carrying 2x GBU31/1 JDAMs each but planned to drop one each on both targets and then conduct a BDA, expending remaining bombs on Primary (if necessary) or secondary targets at the Tgt Stp. However... We managed to get the first bombs away, with Fisty destroying the Factory and Mango (frustratingly) only damaging the Processor.

After release, I ordered a Hook Left, which took us directly into the path of the SA-6 that earlier took out Homer. I had just heard the warning about the SA-6 over Uniform, but I was naked on the RWR. By the time it lit up, I was already painted and I think the second missile got me. After ejecting, I had a (literally) birds-eye view of Mango getting the same treatment from the same SA-6. I rude awakening into the Balkans fight!
Nevertheless, the Factory destroyed means a PS for us, even though I had to get a taxi home and Mango is currently spread around most of Montenegro!
