Flight leads in this Sunday's official campaign mission, "Battle for Sinai 8" are requested to post a debrief of their flights actions, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.

Flight Role: Close Escort
Vulture11: "Vosene" AA=0 AG=0 RTB

Mission Outcome: MS
Role - Close Escort to Strike (Thunder1) with Mongo1 (Sweep).
Plan - Stay within 5nm of Strike and prevent them being engaged by any air threats. During final brief Strike announced that they were splitting into 2 elements to engage ground target. This presented an issue to Close Escort as it was a 3-ship. Recommend any split of protected flight is briefed to Escorts during planning stage not at final brief.
Execution - Ingress uneventful apart from a HOTAS issue for lead that caused to to had over temporary lead to #3. Numerous threats were monitored including those being engaged by Sweep but none close enough to Strike to be a factor.
Once Strike called Miller we RTB'd, prepared to Delouse Sweep but this was not needed. Straight in approach from 10nm as it was night.

General mission BAI along the flot. Inflight goal was to attempt and wipe out 2 known SA-6 sites with no radars.
Ingress uneventful, did a 360 turn 20nm from target area to allow Mongo flight to establish airpicture, then split up into elements and attacked the two targets.
Once done, we called Millertime and RTB'ed.
As Vosene mentioned we decided during flight briefing to split flights into elements and hit 2 targets at the same time. Ofc we should have announced this to the other flights to allow them proper planning, and will do so in the future. On the other hand the 2 targets were 10nm from eachother so separation was really not any greater than a normal 4 ship wagonwheel attack.
Communications was OK, should have provided and requested sitreps from other flights, rather than just announcing "Thunder11 in hot" and "Millertime". |

Transitioned out to sweep area. Initial radar scans around the target area showed the area clear so called strike flight into the AO.
However as we reached the northern limit of the sweep we had contacts to our NW/W that we needed to monitor. As we started monitoring these hostiles, we were jumped by a couple of separate pairs of Mig23's from the east.
Long and the short of it was that 3 and 4 got shot down, bit of a failing on mission plan, keeping together and in sorting the target.
Important point for everyone to note. It is a factor in the loss of 3 and 4 that 3 closed in and locked a Mig23 and handed the same target to 4. However, it transpires that the Mig was in fact a 2 ship in extremely tight formation. Thus 3 and 4 fixated on what they thought was a single contact and ended up following their target in such a way as to put the targets wingman on their tail, which ultimately did for 3 and 4.
Another note is that there was no call for delouse from #3 (even when his wingman was shot down). It is possible that an early delouse call on the merge might have saved 3.
1 and 2 dealt with a couple of threats until strike called itself RTB and Mongo 1 came back as tail end Charlie. All things told, a good effort from the sweep, which succeeded in its task of keeping all hostile aircraft away from the strike flight AO.
Key learning points:
1) Fly as pairs
2) Keep an eye out for the wingman - it seems they are capable of masking their radar profile with another jet even when you are within 20nm.
3) Call an early delouse if you are not in a position of advantage (equal numbers is not a position of advantage).
4) Strike flights need to be prompt in calling 'Miller Time' or 'Off target RTB' - it took a call from Vulture to confirm this, probably after the event.
5) Don't fly/sweep/CAP north/south when the direction of threat is W/NW, you are essentially blind.
