Flight leads in this Sunday's official campaign mission, "Strong DPRK 19" are requested to post a debrief of their flights actions, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.
Please put the following information at the top of your post:

Poppy disconnected on INGRESS and could not reconnect, so we pressed on as a 3 ship. We had trouble adjusting speed to keep the strike in our box, but got to target in position. When strike turned early and scramble flights launched, suddenly we found ourselves out of position again.
We kept a pair of M-29s from the NE from entering the fight, but by then Panther was engaged in a turning furball. We could not fire into the mess because of no CAF so we tries our best support.
In the end, we we able to retreat and engage, but Panther had cleared itself.
The lesson for both escort flights ... it will sound familiar ... wait for it ... we got too close and were attacked from below. |

Ingress was uneventful. We tried to stay 30nm in front of flight as briefed. As we neared our IP for our push towards Pyontaek airbase there was a breakdown of communications between escort flights, magic and strike flight. Strike flight turned inland early due to Magic declaring green lane to target areas. This left strike with only a 2 ship escort and exposed right (estern) flank as the remaining escorts where ahead of strike as briefed.
At steepoint 5 we turned toward steepoint 7 (Pyontaek airbase) and received info from Magic that a 4 ship SU-25 flight was landing. Flight was told not to engage these as they were no factor. Toward the end of our hot leg it was decided to attack the aircrafts anyway to get them out of the picture. We never got a shot off as they ran away from us, and I told flight to disengage and turn cold, but in same moment #2 called MIG-29 contacts on top of the SU-25 and we reengaged these. I have no idea how they got so close without me picking them up, but apparently they came down from the north according to Floyd.
At the same time there were calls from strikeflight that they in hot and being spiked by MIG-29 to their 9 o'clock. This left us with no other option than to press the attack and engage the SU-27 though they were really too close. What followed degenerated into a furball where we lost #3 & #4 while #1 and #2 managed to escape south. #2 was defensive and hugging the ground being chased by MIG-29/SU-27. He called for a delouse but in the end he ended up clearing my tail twice (Thanks Floyd!) At this point the call to RTB had been called and we disengaged and headed south joining the other remnants of the package with the occasional delouse. #2 was very low on fuel, intially with a fuel over homeplate of just 300lb. In the end he shut down the aircraft with around 500lb. I landed with more than 4000lb fuel left.
The good things:
I really liked the idea that we waited for all flights to line up on the taxiway before taking off. It was discussed in the escort briefing but maybe we forgot to mention it to the strike flight (ahem ...) I really think this should be SOP.
Good rejoin, flight home and recovery. I think everyone landed within 3 minutes. Ofc there werent many of us left ...
The bad things:
Communications broke down completely when things got hot and only recovered when a good portion of the package was shot down ...
We really shouldn't have had that green lane to target discussion. It was taking place at the wrong time and it left a muddy picture and escorts out of place.
Lesson learned:
1000nm flights is very doable, at least for the escort flights. I could have landed with 5000lb+ if need be. (What was the fuel situation for the strike flight?)
#2 managed to fly all the way home on 3300lb of fuel, including a climb to A40+ all the way from 1000ft. |

BTW, we won because the DPRK had 5 days to capture Punsan ... our CAS missions could have likely saved the day and won the campaign.

Yeah I really enjoyed this campaign but we ended up metagaming a bit too much. If we are to play it again we should focus on supporting the ground units with CAS missions and hold out.

We've won the campaign because the reinforcement level is greater than 168,
whatever that means. The former 7 day rule is commented out (check save1.tri).

We haven't been at day 7.
I think reinfocements get added regularely or by certain
events (transports?) and fill up ground units and the team level,
so Crowebar could be spot-on :-)

Mission PS
Mission uneventful as Escort did their stuff until final 20 miles to target. According to ACMI 2 Mig29A's and a J11 scrambled from both airfields. Came up fast and shot down Sabe and Mango. Element 2 Sharpe and Scruffy managed to get weapons off before the scrambled fighters from Osan could intercept them and turned away, However Scruffy was shot down a short time later. One of the escort flights took out one of the scrambled fighters allowing Sharpe to move to safety. Sharpe's bombs destroyed the runway at Osan airbase, he remained in the vicinity in a supporting role engaging four Su MKK 30's, destroying 2 of them before RTB.
Well done Sharpe.
Tactics.
This is not the first time we have been spanked when running into a ground target aka target fixation.
There are two options.
Better coordination in the strike package so one element is ground attack and the second is air to air cover.
This means we can only attack one target at a time.
Or, if escorts are available, to remain in very close proximity to the strike and specifically monitor these active airbases for scrambled fighters etc.
