The only time you have more fuel than you need is when your jet is on fire... When the weight of the paper equals the weight of the airplane, only then you can go flying. |

Flight Role: DCA Fury11: "Griffin" AA=2 AG=0 EJT Fury12: "Elmo" AA=2 AG=0 RTB Fury13: "Floyd" AA=2 AG=0 RTB
Mission Outcome: PS
ELOA: Novac
We took off after some minor tech with Floyd who didn't have a HUD for some reason.
We headed to our cap area and had two Hercybirds flying east. Lumper assigned them to us but then moved us on to attack 3xF-16's heading towards us.
As it happens our AI took care of the Hercules while we dispatched the F-16's (but not before one got Sabre. Sorry mate. )
Immediately after that there were F4s heaing in so we attacked those. Both were downed but not before we also had to engage A-7s. These were also destroyed, but due to a faulty call by the AI AWACs, I was hit by Floyd. He did everything correctly and I did not get a lock warning, so no Blue on Blue score here.
After that Floyd and Elmo continued to CAP in the FAOR until tasked to assist Cowboy flight, who in the end, didn't need the help.
Elmo took the flight home for tea and crumpets as the attacks had been repulsed.
A good mission and, considering it was a "Dmans Mission", most of us survived!!

Ramp start went smoothly apart from Sabre had a technical issue which he had to back out of the Lobo1-1 slot, we were ready to taxi still with plenty of time to play with. Took off buster to conserve fuel, due to our early take off time we had some issues cruising at a decent speed, we mainly cruised at 180-200 knots heading for angels 29, once we fenced in it became obvious we were majorly ahead of time and there was no point trying to fight it any longer as we didn't want to waste fuel performing a 360 to get us back on caret so instead we just decided to roll with it and cruised at 300 knots.
Our first engagement was the most important and definitely the most sloppy unfortunately to say. Fury flight were asked to engage C-130's whilst we were asked to engage enemy F-16's, however after reviewing the ACMI Fury flight were alot closer to engage these F-16's and were definitely in range of their slammers but instead they chose to fire on Sabre who was equally as close but posed a higher threat (if the AI is modelled to prioritize the highest threats), I can see that the AI Lobo1-1 was out quite far infront of the human pilots going in rambo style for the F-16's this is what probably gave Chalis the impression we were alot closer than we actually were so its not an Awacs issue, hopefully BMS will patch an option to view all flight members.
I then traded a slammer with the lead enemy F-16 which he trashed my missile and I trashed his but then Fury flight then engaged the F-16's.
Also may I comment that the way our flight handled such dangerous aircraft was careless at best, admittedly there wasn't much we could do about the rambo AI, but at the time sabre was fired on he was 6nm out in front of me, and Wolfman was 8nm on my 6 so we were spread out far too much to support each other effectively for BVR, Sabre was effectively going up against the F-16's on his own as Fury flight were already occupied with the C-130's as they had been instructed to do so by Chalis and also I wasn't in range to support until you already had 2 slammers inbound.
Considering this was the first engagement and there were no prior engagements to "split" us up this sort of separation is unexplainable if I'm honest.. We really need to work on sticking together as priority for BVR engagements so we can sort targets easily, engage at the same time, go defensive and if anything survives we need to form up as best as possible for re-engagement.
Other than that the rest of the engagements went smoothly, myself and wolfman engaged a pair of A-7E's with ease, Wolfman went for a slammer shot which splashed and I closed in for a heater shot, shortly after Wolfman then had a bird strike (looked like an ostrich if I'm honest) at 25,000ft which caused fatal engine damage causing him to lose all power a collision with the ground was unavoidable (I got this covered Wolfman ;) ), Finally engaged a single F-5E with another heater afterwards one thing that suprised me on this mission was how difficult it was to get good tone with the AIM-9LM's from front aspect, he must have been having the same problem as he never fired on me as we went for the merge. Final engagement was another F-5E that was capping, I engaged this with my last AIM-120. All flights then returned to base where my router thought it would challenge my skills by making me land with ping times in excess of 1500-2000ms.. goodtimes..
Sorry for the small rant greem flight but its all in aid of bettering ourselves for next time, I can set up a few training scenario's if necessary to work on this.

Intended lessons Learned from the TE writer's point of view:
1) Weapon Managment (limited supply of slammers) 2) Target Prioritization (C130's were loitering,as a distraction) 3) Interflight cooperation. (hostile F16's went exactly in the middle of the 2 FAOR's) 4) 12'oclock radar coverage (a7's were at A0 while their escort was at A40) 5) Fuel managment.(yes the airbase was close but badly managed engagements could force early RTB's. I was expecting flight leads to call racetracks above A40)
What didn't work out as planned was the A7-F5's attacks. There were supposed to be 2 sets of 2A7's-2F5's trying to sneak through the East and West FAORs but only 1 set showed up.
@Joif F5's had Aim9P that's why they didn't shoot.
One more thing the future reference: F4 -F,E's are Active shooters ;)

Yes Joif, could any of you see the ostrich?? I will talk with Mr Nicholas D. Chabraja West Falls Church, in Fairfax County, Virginia when I pay a visit at the factory at General Dynamics Corporation. It must be highlighted; the risk to dammage a F16 aircraft hitting a ostrich at 25000 feet. I will propose to add the risk in the fly manual. |
