The TE stock is very low for now, so let's start writing guys.

If you have any, just forward them to me please.

Make sure the TE complies with SOP9.1

Thanks.

Hmmm... dont delete my post without my permission. I had a valid reason and it was not offensive. I asked you a couple of simple questions and i expected a couple of simple answers, you gave me everything but. I will post again to the same effect, although slightly more pointed.

In reply to ur email yes I do listen to what you say, I have been very careful to try and adhere to the rules that you have laid down be they official or not (I think this is what you are referring to about the whole sop being about to change, I'm not actually complaining to you about any of my tes, I've been doing it according to all the rules you told me). I accept that, as you so rightly pointed out, it is your job and not mine to accept and reject any te that you receive and that I have nothing to do with it.

maybe you need a diagram to show you what I'm getting at snakebite:

http://cid-aae56d1764aed701.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/falcon%20stuff/50%20mile%20rule%20broken.jpg

To explain the picture, the red line which shows a flight path which i put all the way around the border to show me where 50 miles away from the edge of the map is. You can clearly see that sundays target is about 10 miles too close to the edge.

So I will ask you again (dont delete it this time ;-) ), is the 50 mile rule still a rule? or have u decided to shorten it to 40 miles? are there any exceptions i or anyone else should be aware of?

I have one in test right now.

What's the purpose behind the 50 mile edge rule? Seems extreme to me, and cuts out great swathes of useable map in The Balkans theater.

Maybe we should fly Panama (damn good idea Malc!) - its got a 125 mile borber before the edge of the map in all directions :)

We had a weird mission where we were doing a CAP very close to the edge of the Balkans map, with weather AF applied. It wasn't an issue as I recall, it just looked strange cos the clouds suddnely stopped if you flew off the map. There weren't any tech issues and I seem to recall the te went well. I do tend to agree that 50 miles is little OTT. A reasonable point for discussion maybe. Let's keep it polite though, eh?

its a graphics issue until you fly about 17 miles off the map, then it causes a ctd.

i also have done a few missions on and offline and experienced only a visual problem with a big wall of clouds which i found could be fixed by using weather af. the missions that i did that were close to the map are my favourite and i did them online several times with my previous squadron and other people in hyperlobby with no ctd or anything. the only time it has caused an issue is when me and snake deliberately flew off the map and kept on going until the game crashed (about 17 miles out). this doesnt really prove anything regarding the stability of a genuine te.

I dont understand why u cant discuss it now, or even change it now. the rule has been brought into effect without ur meeting why cant it be taken away or changed without ur meeting?.

Anyway, this is not the reason for my post, i am not complaining to have the rule changed. i think its very clear what the problem is. Here we have a te that broke the rule by 20% not a neglectable factor in my oppinion, unless the rule has been changed or there are exceptions to the rule, so here i am asking snakebite this question.

snakebite?

I've NOT mentioned the Amended Rules in the first post. I've mentioned SOP9.1 instead.

so im asking for the 3rd time, this time please answer, this is getting boring...

Is the 50 mile rule a rule or not? Is it now 40 as it appears to be in tomorrows te? Or are there exceptions to the rule that we all need to know about?

Answer!

We need to remember that Snakebite is a volunteer doing a difficult job that Tracer asked him to take on to ensure that every member of the 185th can enjoy our Sunday night flying, the "jewel in the crown" of the 185th.

Ultimately Snakebite's role is to ensure that we have a TE available for us to fly every Sunday, that it is up to the standard required of a 185th TE and will not present a significant probability of technical issues (such as a CTD or warping) online.

The 185th rules for TE building are designed to help achieve this but ultimately this is about meeting the required objectives and we need to allow some leeway as long as Snakebite achieves his remit. If he didn't adopt this approach then many more TE's would be rejected. That doesn't make the rules worthless; they provide an excellent template for what a writer requires to help ensure their TE is accepted. Each TE is however different and comparing one against another fails to consider them in context.

Two examples:

In the case of Tomb's 24 player TE we were able to significantly increase the number of aircraft beyond the 185th rules as it was all WVR combat and we thoroughly tested it. For a TE with BVR this would have caused major technical issues as anyone who has watched back an ACMI of the TE will have realised.

On the 50nm rule, it may be the ingress direction, direction of the enemy threat, lack/type of enemy air threat at the target, type of weapons employed etc means that an objective can safely be placed 40nm from the edge of the map without significant risk of creating a CTD situation but that doesn't make the 50nm rule worthless.

Of course we should continue to review the rules to ensure they remain relevant and we have a process in place for this but as Douglas Bader said:

"Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools."

If a "rouge" TE gets through, everyone's Sunday is ruined and it will be Snakebite that is responsible, not the TE writer. He is acting on behalf of Command and must have the final say about what is suitable and what isn't. As long as TE writers work with Snakebite and act on his feedback then there is rarely an issue.

Personally I'd say that Snakebite has done a very successful job since taking on the role. Many of us will remember the amount of e-mail traffic, regular meetings on a Sunday evening at 1930 and even sometimes re-writing TE's on a Sunday evening to fix them before we had Snakebite in this role.

I would therefore like to say a public thank you for your hard work and a difficult job well done Snakebite.
