Unfortunately, Seeker has been dismissed from the 185th due to not having time to take part in our weekly flights. We hope that you consider rejoining should your situation change.

News from the 185th: In the words of our CO, Winder:

"Hi All,

this message (below) was recently sent out to the Flight Leads and by now most if not all of you should have had some inkling of it or even read it, I have however decided to alter the time scale and reduce the time from 6 to 3 months, this is more than adequate for everyone to become familiar with IRC and to make the break from ICQ, so from mid February ICQ will no longer be used for Squadron general Comms, however, this does not mean that everyone can wait till then before making the switch, it is essential that everyone does that as soon as possible to facilitate the integration of IRC and so that those experienced with IRC will be able to help those new to it.

So it is now a squadron requirement that everyone have IRC set up on their system and start using it for general Communications within the squad, if there is anything you are not certain of you can ask either myself, Reaps (Red Flight 2ic) or Chaser, or your flight leads, all the flight leads and 2ic's have got IRC installed and running and also have the channel- and password info.

This then is the original message (Wolfy's remark: slightly edited version ;):

I would like the squadron as a whole to start making a positive move away from ICQ as the primary means of communication and towards mIRC, the past few months have shown IRC to be a very stable general comms platform and is far better for social interaction than ICQ as well.

I would like eventually (within 3 months) to phase ICQ out for squad general comms, this does not mean it cannot be used by individuals of course, but it will mean that mIRC will become the standard device within that time, so getting yourselves used to it as quickly as possible will lead to a smoother transition than otherwise.

Why the change? Well, although some have never had a problem with ICQ the same cannot be said of all, it is often unpredictable on the night and can be very slow in transmitting messages, there is little you can do with ICQ that cannot be done with IRC (in fact I can't think of anything) so there is nothing to lose and everything to gain, it just takes a very short time to get used to the mIRC format etc. All in all I feel that moving to mIRC will be of greater benefit to the squadron as a whole than sticking with ICQ."

Click here to download the help documents regarding how to set up and use mIRC with the 185th. Once you have unzipped the documents, read the README.TXT file first. Remember that for password information you have to ask your flight lead or 2ic if you haven't received such information already.

News from Green Mambas: KTel has made the decision that it is time for him to step down from his duty as flight lead of Green Flight. We in green flight are delighted (umm, that came out wrong, didn't it ... well, let me finish for goodness sake!!). We in green flight are delighted that KTel has decided to stay in the 185th and in the mambas as a pilot :)

Raptor has accepted the responsibility of stepping up one notch and take over the role as new flight lead of the Green Mambas and is therefore promoted to the rank of Major in the 185th VFS. Congratulations Raptor and good luck in your new position. A new 2ic will be announced later.

News from the 185th: In the words of our CO, Winder:

"Hi All,
You may remember some time ago when Triton and Wolfy did the survey for the squadron among the proposed changes was bringing the time of the Saturday Flight forward, it was well recived at the time but no action was taken, in view of the fact that a large number of the squad consist of European pilots who are an hour ahead of us in the UK it would be considerably better for them, it would be no drawback for the UK pilots that I can see, so in line with this the Saturday TE time will be brought forward to 20.30 UK time in 2 weeks time (meaning two saturdays).

So, on Saturday the 30th of November this change will come into effect, this will allow plenty of time for all to make any re-arrangements to their schedules, Blue flight of course are free to arrange whatever time suits them on the Sunday, but from the 30th November onwards the Saturday flight time is 20.30 UK time."

News from the 185th: Hi all, I have been asked about the progress of the new website by a number of people. The new site is coming along nicely, but there are still some technical issues that needs to be solved. Once everything is up and running technically, a time of testing will also be needed to ensure that everything is working as intended. So, I don't think it will be ready before the end of October.

When will it be ready then? Well, the short and sweet answer is that it will be ready when it is ready, but we are working hard to make sure that that is as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

Regards,
Wolfy.

  23rd October - 2002

The TE Rota has been updated. Bobs and Seeker has joined the rota and I have included them from the start of December onwards, so there has been a change in the order.

Thanks for volunteering guys, we are looking forward to be challenged by your creations.

Dragon, Jester, Lionheart, Sarge and Skylark has all been transferred to the reserves. Therefore I have included Bobs and Seeker earlier in the TE Rota. Let me know if anyone of you two have a problem with making a TE as per the current rota:

Bobs: 30th November.
Seeker: 7th December.

Regards,
Wolfy.

  13th October - 2002

Hi all, I actually finished an update quite some time ago, but because of a mistake of mine and the wonderful world of Microsoft Windows it was all lost so I had to do it all again. Hence I will be keeping it shorter this time, but at least you'll get some idea on what has happened in the 185th in these last few months.

We're still alive and kicking and the weekly flights have taken place as before. It is just this site that has more or less died because of different reasons. The new site is being worked on and will be up one of these days. There's no point in me saying a date, because that has been proven to be wrong in the past, but have faith, it will be there soon.

Right, down to the facts of what has happened in the 185th lately. First and most important of all, we have had a change in leadership in the 185th. Triton and Wolverine has stepped down from their positions as CO/XO. Here it is in our own words:

"This statement is from both Triton and Wolverine.

We feel that the time has come to step down from our duties as CO and XO of the 185th. We have had these positions for over 1,5 years now, and itīs time to let someone else who has fresh ideas and sparkling motivation to take the helm.

The work has limited our flying to maximum 1-2 flights a week, and our skills have declined to a level where itīs an achievement to actually get back in one piece.... let alone accomplish anything during the mission. Frankly, the negatives have been outweighing the positives for quite some time and by a big margin.

Neither of us want to give up flying with the 185th altogether, flying is what we got into this for in the first place... so we will hopefully return to being pilots in Green Flight where we originally came from.

We hope that we have been able to perform our duties satisfactory, and hope that the 185th continues to be one of the premiere VFS:s on the Net. The Senior Officers will discuss who our successors will be, we will continue to function as CO/XO until successors are appointed but no longer than to the end of October.

Thank you all for the good times we had, we look forward to keep flying with you.

Best regards,
Triton and Wolverine."

As has been the case before in the 185th, it didn't take long for some sad, eh, great people to step forward to take on the challenge of leading the 185th. It is with great pleasure that I now announce that the new Commanding Officer of the 185th is Kim "Winder" Gowney, the former and long time Second in Command of Red Flight. At his side he will have Andy "Seawolf" Honey as his Executive Officer. Seawolf is fairly new to being a Senior Officer. He did have the position of 2ic for Blue Flight for a short while, more about that below.

As a result, Winder is promoted to Colonel and Seawolf is promoted to Lt. Colonel in the 185th VFS. Congratulations to the both of them, I'm sure they will make a terrific job, but remember that they can only do so much, they need our support.

News from Blue Eagles: A while back Ballistic decided to step down from his position as Second in Command over Blue Flight. Seawolf took over the position as 2ic of Blue, but when the change was made in Command Seawolf took the opportunity to serve as our new Executive Officer. This left Blue Flight without a 2ic. Not for long though as Ballistic returned to the position and now continues on as the 2ic in Blue.

Ballistic's efforts within the Blue Eagles has not gone unnoticed by Command or indeed by his Flight Lead, Tracer. In the words of Blue Eagles flight lead, Tracer:

"Ballistic has been a rock solid 2ic that we always could count on. I will now point on something that Ballistic should have big credits for.

He gave some of our former pilots private lesson in English on weekdays we didn't fly on and he became respected by all of the guys in BE for the nice guy he is. So I really would like to recommend him for some recognition for all the good and hard work he have done."

The old Command (Triton and Wolverine) can only agree with the above statement, as we have seen how Ballistic together with Tracer has turned Blue Flight from a flight with very poor records in attendance to one of the best, if not the best flight in the 185th VFS. Because of this Command hereby awards Ballstic with the Unit Commendation for outstanding work within a 185th flight. Congratulations Ballistic, well deserved buddy!

Wolfy.

News from Green Mambas: In the words of Green Mambas pilot, AIM:

"It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my resignation from the 185th. There have been some great times and I have immensely enjoyed meeting all the guys/gals... It has been a real pleasure being in the Squad and there have been some wonderful times, I hope I don't regret this decision too much and I am not begging to be let back in next week, lol.

Thank you for all your help, support and the good laughs we have shared.

AIM"

185th Command is very sad to see AIM leave and wish him the very best for the future. Some of the other "old timers" in here will fondly remember the great furballs that were flown and AIM was a major contribution to it being so much fun.

AIM will be placed on the honorary roster as he has been a valued member of Green Flight and the 185th VFS as a whole. You will always have a seat with us if and when you are up for an impromptu flight mate.

Regards,

Triton, Commanding Officer
Wolverine, Executive Officer

News from the 185th: The TE Rota has been updated to cover the months of June and July. Welcome back to BigBrother, who again is on the Rota... or should I say "darn, even more chances to get blown out of the sky in the future now :)".

We currently have 7 members on the Rota. Please let me know if you want to be added there too. You may have told me before but I have misplaced the list I used to keep.

Note: Even though you're not on the TE Rota, you are of course welcome to make and submit a TE, either for use for ad hoc flying or for an official mission, just send the mission including a briefing to Triton. Before you start though, let Command know and you will receive a template to use for your mission briefing. The difference, if you are on the Rota, is that you will have a specific date before which time the mission should be submitted. If you can't make that time you should let Triton know as soon as possible.

Regards,
Wolfy.

While we regret to see him go, Command realizes that real life comes first and wishes MadDog the very best for the future. Even though he was only with us for a short period of time, he made a positive impact to the 185th, both with input and by finding a lot of new pilots in a time of crisis in the flights, so his duty as Recruitment Officer was carried out with honor :). Thanks for this time MadDog, we hope you'll stay in touch.

MadDogMcQ has been moved to the honorary members roster.

Triton, Commanding Officer

  6th April - 2002

News from the 185th: Due to a promotion at work that will have him travel across UK, Homer has decided to leave the 185th for the moment. He might return when/if things settle down so for the time being he has been placed on the reserves roster. Homer will be sorely missed, for his qualities as a pilot, but mostly for being a great guy and a driving force in the Grey Ghosts flight and the 185th as a whole. We hope that you will return to fly with us some day mate. Until then, all the best wishes to you in your new position, Homer and don't be a stranger.

As a result from Homers decision, Grey flight is left without a 2IC and there's no natural successor since Grey is a relatively young flight and the veteran members in the flight just don't have the time to take on that responsibility. This would mean that Orca would have the whole burden to lead this flight on his own and he barely had time when Homer was his 2IC. Add to this that the 185th has never been able to fill all five flights with pilots and consequently all flights with the exception of Black has always been in a shortage of pilots, Command together with Orca has decided to disband Grey flight for now and return to a four flight squadron. This way it will be easier for us to maintain a reasonable level of pilots in each flight as we have been settled around 50 members for a long time now.

Command presented this idea to the pilots in Grey and no one objected to the idea as everyone understood the reasons behind this decision. This measure is not permanent though, should we have enough pilots in the future, Grey flight might be reinstated and all original members will then have the option to transfer back to Grey flight if they so wish.

Further more, Command decided to transfer the pilots as shown below:

Green Mambas: Muffin, Orca and Saint
Red Wolves:
Cobra, Pops and Stingray

There was a new pilot destined for Grey Ghosts and he will now join Blue Eagles. More information on him will soon be available.

Regards,

Triton, Commanding Officer
Wolverine, Executive Officer.

News from Blue Eagles: RazorBlade has passed the assessment flight and is thus promoted to the rank of 2nd Lt. in the 185th VFS. Congratulations, RazorBlade!

Due to his many technical problems during Saturday night flights, Tango, has been transferred to Blue Eagles to see if Sundays, which often sees less activity on the internet, will help him achieve a better result. Fingers crossed mate, we hope you'll get to have some trouble free flights this way.

  21st March - 2002

News from Red Wolves: Rabies has has decided to take a break from the 185th for a while as his private commitments has made it harder and harder for him to make the weekly flights on a regular basis. Therefore Rabies has been transferred to the Reserves roster. We all hope you'll be able to rejoin active duty again mate, either way keep in touch.

Red flight has a new member, callsign Chaser. Welcome to the 185th Reservoir Dogs, Chaser, we hope you'll enjoy your time with us. All information needed to add Chaser to your contacts can be found on the roster as always.

The TE Rota has been updated.
  17th March - 2002
News from Grey Ghosts: Stingray has changed his e-mail to jens.byh@zeta.telenordia.se, please update your e-mail address books accordingly.

News from the 185th: Sorry for the lack of updates recently, but I have been very busy in my personal life and also been busy together with Triton in coming up with some changes that will happen in the 185th in the near future. These changes have also effected how the new website will be designed and thus a further delay in it's completion has become necessary. I have an exam coming up next week and will go away over the next weekend, but after that I'll have time to really focus on bringing all this together and complete the new site with some excellent help from a member of our squad.

So, please bear with me, Triton and those helping us just a little while longer, hopefully it'll all be worth it in the end :). You will be notified of the changes in an e-mail from Command before launching of the new site so you don't have to worry of not being informed of what will happen in the future. All SHL results that hasn't been presented yet will be available when the new site is launched.

Regards,

Wolverine,
XO/185th VFS.

News from the 185th: Command was recently approached by Captain Ballistic, Second in Command of Blue Eagles, who expressed his admiration for the hard work and commitment that Major Tracer, Flight Leader of Blue Eagles, has put into the Flight over a long period of time resulting in the Blue Eagles going from being a Flight in disarray to a strong group with high morale. In Ballistics own words:

"As you are very aware, the flight went through a long period of unrest with many changes of flight leader and 2IC then Tracer took over the role of 2IC to Voodoo. Unfortunately Voodoo had to step out of the Flight lead role because of his work commitments, but prior to this Tracer was acting as Lead and 2IC for around 10 weeks. He did a great job of keeping the flight going and took up the Flight Lead position permanently. Blue Flight has grown bigger and stronger with a good morale that I feel is down to Tracer's commitment and attitude towards the 185th."

Command agree wholeheartedly with this motivation, and has decided to decorate Major Tracer of the Blue Eagles with the Unit Commendation.

Unit Commendation has been awarded to: Tracer

News from the 185th: After last weeks mission, Flying Fish, Command was approached by the Second in Command of Grey Flight, Homer, who was also backed up by his Flight Lead, Orca. Homer had the following to say:

"Muffin was excellent. She flew very good formation, held the CAP station very well, and done everything asked/commanded of her. The perfect Wing(wo)man! And to CAP :) it all, she scored three kills (100% missile deployment).

I think that Muffin is due for an award for her determination and perseverance. She has shown great courage and endeavour for sticking it out with the 185th, some may have thrown in the towel long ago. Her performances are steadily improving, let's reward her hard work with an Achievement Medal!"

Command didn't have to think for a millisecond over this nomination for a reward and thus it is with great pleasure that Triton, Commanding Officer, and I, Wolverine, Executive Officer, hereby announce that Muffin has been awarded the Achievement Medal for her undying commitment to the 185th Reservoir Dogs while caring for her children at home and even though she obviously has very little time to fly compared to most, she has continued to improve all the time.

On a personal note I would like to add that I have had the opportunity to help Muffin on the odd occasion and also flown with her a number of times, although not as often as I would have liked :). I have always found her to be great fun to fly with, as I'm sure her first instructor, Winder, can attest to and our former CO, Shodan would agree even more. I was afraid that Muffin would leave when Shodan decided to leave the 185th, but she stayed on and all credit to her for that.

Although she doesn't think so herself :), she has become a good pilot and will continue to improve even further with more time in the cockpit, something that the 185th Instructor Pilots project will offer in not such remote a future.

Achievement Medal has been awarded to: Muffin

Congratulations Muffin, well deserved!

The SHL has been updated with the latest results. The highest score was achieved by MadMax with an excellent 23.5 points, i.e. 7(!) A-A victories, showing that he indeed is a Top Gun. Of course, MadMax flew the mission with me, Bobs and Tango, so we just let him have the kills as we know what an itching trigger finger he has :). MadMax was not alone though as both BigBrother and Homer achieved an excellent score of 23 points. Very nice job gentlemen!
