Misson for Sunday 02nd December will be a training on formation flying and some A2G KOTAR Range work. We’ll also continue working on the Overhead Break.

Additional reference material. We’ll be practicing Combat Spread with Tac Turns, Shackles, Cross-Turns and Hook Turns:

Note that this last document refers to BDA (Bearing, Distance, Altitude). We no longer use this. The correct order for correcting to the required formation is ABC (Altitude, Bearing, Closure).

Cowboy11 “Vosene” 0 5 RTB
Cowboy13 “Echion” 0 5 RTB
Cowboy14 “Mango” Tech (Internet stopped working)

Great mission. Focus was on Tac Turns and KOTAR range procedures:

#3 and #4 practiced Tac Turns on way to range. Some excellent formation work.

Unfortunately before we got to range Mango’s internet failed so he was declared a Tech.

#1 took the lead again approaching range. Pattern as per KOTAR range guide.

10 passes in total:

1x Dry
6x BDU-33 30degree Dive Bomb
3x Strafe

Excellent range work with good pattern and 5 direct hits for each aircraft.

RTB was an Overhead Break onto Runway8. Good landings.

Key Learning Points

Need to keep base turn within 2nm on range to hit numbers for 30 degree Dive Bomb parameters as per KOTAR range document.

Stay above foul deck to avoid risk of flying into terrain. Especially difficult when strafing.

Use of TCN helps with Combat Spread spacing.

Good video showing KOTAR range work. Action starts at 7.00 into the video

Fly past of KOTAR range from North to South. Note the 3 groups of Bullseyes in a cross for BDU drops, target vehicles and 2x strafe lanes at the Southern end of the range.
