The last mission to take out a deep airbase was a success but another one was detected, which will require a little extra work and flight time to disable.

Batajnica AB is actively launching enemy aircraft and is your target. It consists of two runways, 32/14 L and R, and these are you primary targets.

There are a number of SAM battalions in the area but only one of the static units SSE of the air base is fully operational. It is an SA-3 unit (at PPT57) and should not be a factor. There are reports of SA-10 and SA-6 battalions close to the target, though their strength is unknown. No SA-10 launches have been reported so it is assumed that the FCRs are disabled.

Mission fail

Due to low numbers, Banshee4's task was combined Escort and SEAD roles. Plan was to have elements in 10nm trail with one of each element watching for A-A threats and the other watching for SAM threats. Loadout was 4 slammers and 2 HARMs each.

Approaching the Serbian coast, an SA6 spike was received at 12 o'clock, with Griffin estimating this to be 80-90nm range. Mig29 spikes were received from 2 o'clock aligning with the only threats reported by AWACS. I called for Griffin to drop the A-G task and join me in a right turn to engage the Mig29s at 40nm range and closing. We both got a slammer away at each target but I was quickly defensive to a Mig29 from my 10 o'clock (a scramble 2-ship from Tivat).

Vosene and Fisty were not clear as to their targets to attack resulting in us all becoming merged with Mig29s.

I was quite quickly the only one still flying from Banshee and managed to get 2 Mig29s when turning back to try and delouse the rest of the flight. The targets I picked up were close but the I let the scrambled Mig29s get in behind me and they also accounted for Cobra6 as well.

Lessons learned. We took the threat of Tivat airbase far too lightly. I should have had 3 and 4 watching for scramble fighters. Even so, Tacview shows that there were even more Mig29s scrambling from Tivat after we were all downed, so we may have found it very difficult to get through to our mission target.

Next mission is clearly to take out Tivat Airbase.
