Intent of mission was a fairly low risk A2A BVR CAP mission to develop A2A and assess 4.34 AI capabilities and differences to 4.33

Plan

CAP orientation was NW SE with 1&2 on left side and 3&4 on right side with a 20nm split in range and azimuth between elements. Intent was to always have one element hot. Needed to stay on CAP for 30 minutes.

Execution

#1&2 on hot leg picked up two hot groups split in range and azimuth. Right group was closest, a 2-ship. #3&4 turned hot and #1&2 turned cold. #3&4 committed on the right East group. Two shots, one from each aircraft resulted in 2x splashed MiG-21. #1&2 were now hot with #3&4 cold. They engaged the left/West MiG-21 2-ship. #1 launched and went cold, #2 continued to press for a shot. 3&4 were now hot and #3 instructed #2 to turn cold, which he did after firing at the one remaining MiG but was well inside MAR. #3&4 monitored and confirmed both MiG-21s had been splashed, one each by #1 and #2.

After the Mig-21 engagements, picture was now clear so the flight returned to CAP positions with 20 minutes of the CAP time remaining.

#1 picked up a jamming group on CAP NW of the CAP around at about 100nm. After the group did not get any closer #3&4 pushed forward and managed to lock the 2-ship Su-30 bandit group and dragged them back towards #1&2. #1&2 fired right at MAR before turning defensive with a missile inbound on each of them, which they successfully dragged out. #3&4 were now hot and confirmed #1’s bandit was splashed. With just 1x Su-30 remaining, #3 fired 2x Slammer, both of which hit and splashed the remaining MiG. #4 also fired and hit the MiG just after #3’s second missile hit it.

With #4 low on fuel, #3&4 proceeded direct to base joining downwind for a successful landing on 27R while 1&2 did a successful vectored VFR approach back onto 27R.

Overall a successful mission with great mutual support between the elements, good Comms and the wingmen did a great job.

Key Learning Points

During the second MiG-21 engagement MAR was broken significantly chasing a shot when there was no need as the other element were hot and monitoring. Respect the MAR even if you haven’t shot yet.

Comms. Remember full callsigns in responses required on Uniform Comms check and to reply to directions from Lead in Flight order.

Permission to fire. Unless there is a immediate threat to your aircraft that requires you to fire, Wingmen should only fire on targets once authorized by their Lead.

Thanks to everyone for flying, a great mission and Noddle kindly streamed it. You can watch the mission here.
