On the western front the campaign hasn't advanced as fast as estimated, in spite of constant push efforts from our ground troops, as resistance has been stronger than expected.

Python1 is tasked to interdict enemy ground units, in and around the city of Sayda, on the west coast, with the intent for our troops to capture the city in the next 6h. There still are remnants of two in and around the city, the 292th and the 263th and the 13th Towed AAA Battalion is down at 10%

Serpent1 is to interdict enemy units in and around the city of Beirut, further north on the coast were we know there is a full strength HQ Battalion, and engineer battalion and more units to be moved into the area.

Panther1 is to provide escort for the package.

Note that to the north, there is an active SA5 Battalion, which, while not a threat as long as the flight remain within their flight plans, may be considered a target of opportunity for the SWEEP flight.
Also, we have intel that the enemy is intensifying its sorties, so expect resistance.

The package will consist of 2 AI flights and a SWEEP/ESCORT:

  • Panther1 – SWEEP -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free

  • Python1 – AI -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with Laser JDAMs

  • Serpent1 – AI -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with Laser JDAMs

Timings:

Panther 1 is package commander.

Mission success, all flights: 75% units hit for ordnance expended, and no losses to enemy fighters.

Plan - Engage NE SA-5 then form CAP North of target area

Uneventful ingress. Pickup up two Strober groups to West, no factor. 1 picked up a two-ship at 6oooft, MiG-25, 2 picked up a second MiG-25 group, which didn't show up for 1 but debrief shows a 4-ship not a 2-ship at 6,000ft so something was wrong.

1&2 engaged Mig_25 group at 6,000ft, quickly splashing 3 in total (2 for 2). 1 then supported 2 who said he was in a furball with a Mig_25, 1 was visual but not Tally. 2 then unfortunately fired at 1 with a heater, causing damaged. 1 tried to RTB but exploded due to engine fire.

2 then turned to engage a second group of 4-ship MiG-25, which was the group from 23,000ft that had now shown up. 2 will provided rest of debrief details.

Continued from above...

By the time 2 was able to disengage from the first group (and after shooting his CO), he was already merged with the second group. Being Kansas by this time, he called for a delouse and kept defensive of the missiles being launched from the Mig25s. As luck would have it, the scissor move caused one of the 25s to over-shoot. He was quickly despatched by a guns kill. Fisty was then rescued by Serpent, who engaged the rest of the group, allowing him to sprint south. Being reduced to a Kansas/Winchester singleton, he headed home for a straight in approach and a stern telling off from the Sqn CO.

Takeoff was uneventful; on ingress #3 had problems again boresighting
the MAVs and #4 had a TECH and joined later when the flight was close
to the target area, engaging A2A.

Coming close to our target area we were asked to assist the escort
with a group of MiG-25 and shot down one bandit.

Now with #4 with us and a scattered flight we split to engage
the two tank battalions. What followed was a sequence of aborted
A2G attacks due to incoming bandits, losing one plane to friendly
fire and another - separated while searching for targets and being
defensive - to an SA-13 missile.

All in all a very suboptimal mission due to insufficient lead.
Thinking to fly common tactic "as usual" without giving
strict orders in flight produces bad results most of the time.
