EASTERN SURPRISE

A recon overflight has revealed 2 SS Missile Battalions maneuvering southwest of Damascus. If they continue on their current course, they will pose a significant threat to the Israeli Eastern flank and ground forces there are depleted from recent air attacks. The objective of this mission is to destroy these battalions, or at least hinder their progress towards the Israeli/Syrian border. Enemy SA-2 batteries are positioned to the east and north, near Damascus, but the air picture is fairly quiet, with the majority of fighter aircraft grounded by recent OCA strikes. Nevertheless, the Package Commander should consider the necessity of a dual role SEAD/ESC flight.

We are tasked to seek and destroy the SS Missile Battalions located southwest of Damascus .

INTELLIGENCE
The first image shows the location of the missile battalions approximately 1 hour ago, during the recon overflight.

The second image provides a brief mission overview. The SA-2 batteries referred to can be seen to the east and northeast.

FLIGHT PLAN
The package will consist of 3 AI flights: objectives are:

  • LOBO2 – Destroy enemy SS Missile Battalions -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with AGM-65D

  • SHARK2 – Destroy enemy SS Missile Battalions -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with AGM-65D

  • PANTHER3 – Destroy enemy ground units -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with AGM-88

Timings:

Flight Task TO PP TOT IDM VHF	TACAN	FL

LOBO2 AI	23:54 00:08 00:16 1 1	11/74	200 - 210
SHARK2 AI	23:55 00:11 00:17 2 2	16/79	220 - 230
PANTHER3 SEAD/ESC	23:53 00:08 00:12 3 3	21/84	>250

STP3 is placed as a BSGT opportunity if required.
Leads should decide if the attack is by flights or a package wheel.

Mission success:
LOBO2: 50% units hit for ordnance expended PARTIAL = 33%. MF if Blue-on-blue.
SHARK2: 50% units hit for ordnance expended PARTIAL = 33%. MF if Blue-on-blue.
PANTHER3: No losses to enemy air or SAM defences PARTIAL = 1 Loss . MF = > 1 aircraft lost to enemy Air/SAM

Shark 2 - Interdiction

Shark 21 - Griffin AA=0, AG=2, RTB
Shark 22 - Floyd, AA=0, AG=5, RTB
Shark 23 - Vosene, AA=0, AG=0, RTB

PS

Fell in behind the other two flights and set up an orbit south of SP4.

Once Lobo 2 had finished we called in hot and started our anti-clockwise racetrack to attack the targets that were left.

Vosene and I both had issues with getting a lock that didn't have a steady launch cross. Consequently I only killed two targets and Vosene only launched three fruitless Mavs.

Our post flight debrief discussion was inconclusive as to the true cause of problems but locking up over 10 miles may be an issue.

The rally and return to base was very good and co-ordination was good again.

Flight Role: SEAD/ESCORT
Panther31: "Utopic" AA=3 AG=1 RTB
Panther32: "Zipgun" AA=3 AG=1 RTB

MS

Took off early and we adjusted the speed while en route, managed to fly on time.

The plan had been to engage 3 SA2s - when on site we only had the N-E SA2, and SA17 East and North of the target area.

We took out the SA2 and an Eastern SA17 on the first pass, and we both managed to miss on the 2nd pass, at other SA17s, using HAS weapon mode.

After starting the CAP, we had 3 engagements:
1) was against a couple of helicopters, which I engaged thinking we were not going to get any other contacts.
2) was against a 4ship of Mig21s, we only fired on the 1st element, and left the 2nd element for Lobo2.
3) was against 2 groups in trail, 2 Mig21s and 2 Mig25s. We initially sorted on the 21s but resorted on the 25s since they were the higher threat, and took them out.

On the way back we had a good landing setup/slot in with Shark2.

Good mission, good support between Lobo and Panther, good comms all around.

Lobo 2 - Interdiction

Lobo 21 - Fisty AA=4, AG=6, RTB
Lobo 22 - Echion, AA=1, AG=1, RTB
Lobo 23 - Mango, AA=1, AG=1, RTB

PS

Ingressed as fragged and attacked in a counter-clockwise racetrack. Got all our mavericks off in 3 passes, then joined the CAP, coordinating with Panther. There were I think 3 separate engagements with Mig21s, Mig25s and SU24s. We kept them off while Shark attacked, then guarded the egress. Uneventful egress for a straight-in landing.
