Mission Outcome: MS

Took off and the mission had us over 4 minutes behind schedule. Not good. Then it got hairy and busy with Mig 21s and 23's popping up all over the place.

Weasel engaged most and we engaged some 23's but confusion reigned, especially with a load of Eurofighters in the area. Unfortunately Floyd was hit by flak.

Once over the target Viper were quick about their job and we returned with no other issues.

An interesting first mission Sharpe.

Mission Outcome: MS

We had a lot of contacts in front of us, and had briefed that we may fire if we feel endangered. However, Weasel, the only ones in front of us, did a good job of keeping them away from us. No one fired at us.

We proceeded as tasked, did a combat descent to low level and continued to the IP. It was a bit tricky with that time of the day, had to switch my NVGs on and off so I could see both the hud and the ground.

We have not been engaged by any threats (SAMs or Fighters) so good job all around for all the various type of escort guys!!

The runways hadn't moved (imagine that?!!?) so we engaged all the targets.

We rejoined on the way back, did an ILS landing in yogurt thick fog, it went OK and that was it.

Flight Role: SEAD
Weasel11: Sabre AA=2 AG=0 EJT
Weasel12: Sharpe AA=1 AG=0 EJT
Weasel13: Jack AA=3 AG=0 RTB waiting for update on ground kills

Busy busy mission, it might have been that Weasel took a shortcut to the runway but no fences were harmed.

Learning point.. specify departure and arrival runways so we can read the charts.

Took off and proceeded on route, climbed to A25 became clear we were point and engaged multiple groups of Mig 21's and Mig 23's shooting down 6 enemy aircraft. Eventually supported by Voodoo flight and the Eurofighters.

The Eurofighters were pants.. two of them were shot down on the merge. Surely they are supposed to kill enemy fighters at 40 nm.

Sabre shot down by evil triple A, Sharpe shot down by triple A 5 mins after strike had departed target.

Jack engaged SAM sites but waiting resulting before RTB with an interesting zero visibility landing.. Good job Jack.

Excellent mission Sharpe but the briefing needs more focus.

Flight Role: Sweep
Voodoo11: Crowebar AA=0 AG=0 RTB
Voodoo12: Vieland AA=0 AG=0 RTB
Voodoo13: Vosene AA=0 AG=0 RTB

Mission Outcome: MS

Setting out from a different airbase than the rest of the package we caught up with weasel flight ahead of the escort, but after their first engagements. There were a flight of Mig-23's approaching from the North of flight path which Voodoo sorted and engaged. However Falcon also engaged this flight. A 2nd group of Mig-23's appeared in the same vicinity as the first, but low. We engaged these, but once again these were also engaged by friendlies.

There was no further enemy air activity and the strike flight were clear of the target area so we RTB'd. We received no ILS information during our approach to Choongwon and determined that this was because the AI tower was vectoring us onto the non-ILS runway. So we diverted to Seoul where we found the same again, no ILS signal and ATC vectoring us onto a runway that had no ILS.

We made a TACAN approach and landed, however #1 joined the fence club!

Point of order, it was an SA2 that got me, I was over the target too long after Strike egressed. Was I really there for 5 mins too long?

@ Griffin: Looking at the acmi the reason for your departure was the early take off of Weasel flight due to a navigational error on the grpund at Osan coupled with the Ai 4th of weasel being slow to follow. Thus Weasel flight was nearly 4 mins ahead of the main package.

I have re-flown this mission again tonight in order to verify the ILS situation for Voodoo flight again. I got the same as Sunday, ATC instructing me to land on runway 16L which is not an ILS runway, and there was no ILS. Tried approach to the ILS runway 34R, no ILS and none was expected as tower were directing me in from the other direction. So we weren't going mad, it was a bug!

I then re-flew as the escort into Osan, to make sure I wasn't missing something, ILS worked perfect into Osan (as you guys know!)

Crowebar,
I've worked it out. The BMS nav charts show an ILS approach but my quick sheet and chart set (not 2009 BMS) show no ILS freq for Chungwon - think that may have been the issue.

Learning points:
- Include ATC nav/AFB charts with missions.
- Double check ILS approaches available in both directions if making a bad weather mission.

This issue is related to active runway not being an ILS equipped runway and is something I have experienced before in Falcon.

I would just recommend TE writers set the wind so the ILS runway will be the active on their chosen airfields. If this is not the case and poor weather is expected I would recommend Flight Leads choose a suitable alternate during mission planning. Unfortunately this isn't always going to work because our alternate was 19 ILS at Seoul and the active runway was 01, the opposite direction to Chungwon.

Perhaps now is a good time to add something to SOP 9, as Griffin is working on it.
Just for inclement weather TE's to have the wind set for ILS runway, it can still be a crosswind as long as coming from the general direction of runway heading.
