Flight leads in this Sunday's official mission, "Wonsan BBQ" are requested to post a debrief of their flights actions by Tuesday, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.

Flight was assigned Interdiction, tasked to destroy the MiG-23 on the taxi-way before the took off, destroy the 3 SA-13 from the HQ battalion, and destroy 10 or more from the Mechanized Battalion headed for Wonsan.
An uneventful flight to STP5 meant we could arrive at our loiter station well ahead of time. Indeed, SEAD Escort had killed all four SAM threats covering the area in good enough time as we were able to go inbound to target 10 minutes early. I was hoping we could catch the SA-13 sleeping allowing us plenty room to work with the MiG-23s, but it all went to pot real early.
Inbound initially, Crowebar broke the hard deck of A18 and Griffin shot him down. Immediately two lessons come to mind - respect the hard deck, and make sure you are tuned to TAC channel 13 when supposed to be.
It got worse in the sense the HQ battalion was on the move and the SA-13 were not where we hoped they would be, but at the same time the Mav and Sniper displays were full of moving targets, at least two separate groups, maybe more. Finding the assigned ground units proved all but impossible from here and we never got them.
Right on cue, the MiG-23 appeared on the taxi-way, and I was able to get a couple shots away at them, and they died a horrible and firey death. Poor *******s in the cockpits probably never even got the chance to eject. I have become death...
Unfortunately, I had to break the hard deck at this point too. Although I picked out the targets on the Sniper, by the time I could get a Mav (JSOW) lock on them, I was too close to keep them within gimbals and had no choice but to dive in at them. I made a broadcast shout to tell everyone I was breaking the floor - Blade later confirmed he heard the call on TAC13. Missiles away was at around A8, and a 4G pull brought me level at A4. I then took a hit - I assumed it was AAA or an IR SAM, cos although damaged I probably could have fought the plane home to land it. 30 seconds later though, I took a second hit at around A9 and Hog11 was dying, I had to punch out - but not before a Q3 AWACS call for rescue. Sure enough the angel came and picked me up. Debrief later confirmed I took two hits from AA-7 perhaps from a MiG-23?
Tough mission, but very enjoyable - as Zipgun said, it may well have been a different outcome had we a full compliment of humans for the seats. |

The flight was briefed to attack the SA-2 and SA-4,
one radar per pilot. Due to a technical problem #3 and #4
had to switch targets and #4 destroyed the southern SA-2.
After giving the code words to tell the other flights about
the SA-2, the flight set up a CAP and #3 got order to destroy
the northern SA-2, because MiG-25 had been coming from the north.
The flight approaching the target area called out an SA-4/SA-6,
and #3 and #4 scored a hit to clear the SAM threat. This attack
brought the element over the Wonsan area and on their way back
east, #1 picked up a contact at ang 14, below the ang 18 hard deck,
and warned second element about a bandit taking off from Wonsan.
Attempts to clearly identify the contact resulted in a saturation
of comms and the "bandit" was shot down in friendly fire.
MiG-25 approached the target area and first element scored two hits.
Already on the way back to CAP area, first element could help Shark11
out of a turning fight with a MiG-25.
On the way back home, already down to 3 slammer and 2 heater, the
flight engaged a 4-ship SU-37, scored two hits, evaded 4 missiles
and made it back to alternate base with 160lbs as the lowest fuel
state.
The sequence of events of all flights show how excellent the TE
was designed. A personal lesson learned is rising "confusion" during
complex missions and the scattering of the package after many planes
have converged on a target area.

| Floyd/Griffin could you please give one of my AA kills to Flyingstone, had a look at the ACMI and my missile hit the damaged/downed SU-35 a few seconds after Flyingstones missile and it was as good as gone after just the first hit. Thanks |

We were set up for a sweep over target area, followed by a BARCAP north of target area. On ingress, we encountered a 2-ship of Mig-25s which were dealt with quickly. Next, we had Mig-29As coming in from the west but they were no factor yet.
A minute or so later several 2-ship of Mig-25s came in from the north which were taken out between us and the Sead escort Flight, though we did lose #2 during the missile exchange. However, we were unable to prevent Hog 1 from being taken out by a Mig-23 which just took off from target area.
We loitered for several minutes over the target area before we got the call to RTB. The return flight served us with a 4-ship of SU-37s, which the sead escort flight took out swiftly and with style. |
