Took off & headed directly towards stpt 3 that was the edge of the SA5 envelope. Mango engaged the SA5 with HARMs but without success so Ballistic went closer and lower and destroyed it with a HARM.At the same time Dmans & Cobra took a route more North to find the SA10 and found SA13s. Dmans destroyed the SA3 and Cobra took out an SA13 then held onto his remaining HARM. An SA10 threat circle popped up and Ballistic immediately locked it up and fired a HARM then instructed the flight to go low/low level and hide in between the hills. The SA10 was destroyed then another SA3 popped up. Dmans engaged it but his HARM hit a search radar then the baddies came. SU35's & Mig 29s were engaged and we lost Cobra. Things got rather busy and comms were pretty bad at this point but the flight soon became low on AA weapons and fuel. Mig 31s turned up for the fight and after most AC Winchester Falcon Flight RTB'd with Dmans & Mango getting home for Supper. Ballistic had 1 slammer left but was down to a few hundred pounds of fuel so attempted to get to the Alt Field only to have to eject just short of it.
Mission Failed - The stealth Bombers didn't get to targets and Angel 1 never took off.
A tough mission that was difficult (certainly for me as FL) but it kept us on our toes. Comms could have been better but I think the workload was pretty high and I found it difficult with the Barcap taking a different route to the SEAD Escort to appreciate that they relied on us to keep them away from SAMs, even when we had AWACs - it didn't work for us.
Next time in a mission like this we should perhaps think about the Barcap carrying 1 or 2 Harms so threat circles are visible so they don't have to rely on the other flight to try and talk them away from SAM threats.

Briefing:
between both the flights:
the briefing was quite straight forward, the main issue was the position of the barcap flight. we decided that we would match the steerpoints of the sead escort and the air lift, and create a new station in between the two (stpts 5&6), from where we would simultaneously support the strike, airlift and sead:

within the flight:
we chose aim-120-b over c4 becasue of the extra range, with so many long range threats around.
maximum ranges were set for different enemy aircraft types.
we set an ingress altitude of 27,000feet.
How the flight went:
* we got set up and taxied in no hurry, giving the SEAD escort a chance to clear the sams.
* the instructions given for take off were that all four of us would line up on the runway together and all go full power at 16:04:00. after everyone acknowledging the instruction cowboy11, 12 and 14 hit the power on time, with cowboy14 swiftly hitting the brakes to stay with cowboy13 who decided to ignore his flight lead.
* we ingressed at exactly 27,000feet, 350kts, keeping in touch with awacs (lumper) throughout.
* we entered the sam threat area before the sams were clear so we went music on just before the sa5 boundary.
* having received a call that the sa5 and sa3 had been cleared we went music off and took position over our station (stpts 5&6).
* a few moments later we were informed that an sa10 had been taken out, my flight didn't even know that it existed.
* we were alerted by awacs that there were multiple enemy air craft launches and we headed north towards a 4ship of mig29.
* target aircraft were sorted, but again cowboy13 disobeyed his flight lead and refused to be told which of the 4ship to engage, preferring the mig that lead had locked up.
* having rechecked the air picture it was clear that we were getting dragged towards a 4ship of mig35s, they were hot on us and within 40 miles. Cowboy11 made the call to shoot or reverse. cowboy12 and 13 ignored the instruction, for cowboy13 it was 3 strikes and you are out, he was swiftly shot down by an sa11 (another sam that we didnt know existed). - 1 mig29A was shot down by cowboy14.
* now a 3ship we headed south back towards our station (stpts 5&6) to regain altitude and prepare to re-engage.
* cowboy12 was complaining of mig31 spikes and launch warnings from the north, so we turned north and found a 2ship nearly 60 miles north of us.
* as we got closer it seemed like we were again getting dragged into trouble, another flight of 4 mig29s heading south with the 2ship of mig31s. Because we were 3 and they were 6, cowboy11 made the call for 12 and 14 to engage the mig29s, while he would take two long range shots on the mig31s. there was no intention to kill the mi31s, the idea was just to keep them busy and away from us while we finished off the mig29s.
* with the mig31s out of the way and 2 of the mig29s destroyed we were now being chased south by the remaining 2 mig29s. cowboy12 got enough distance to safely turn and engage taking out a mig29. cowboy11 made a bad judgment of the distance and turned while too close, taking a mig29 down, but also getting himself shot down.
* all the mig29s were shot down, but cowboy1 was now a 2ship.
* the mig31s now returned and cowboy1 engaged them as they engaged the B2s, however the B2s were shot down before the mig31s were.
* in the process of engaging a mig31 cowboy13 was shot down by the sa11 while cowboy12 engaged and killed a remaining mig29S.
* a few seconds later cowboy12 was shot at by the sa3 (despite us being told that it was dead at the start of the mission) and despite evading 2 missiles was eventually shot down.
in conclusion...
1. theron is always right when he is a flight lead and wingmen will do what he tells them. 2. sead escort needs to communicate enemy sam types and positions with other friendly flights - and this information needs to be accurate. at no point did the sead escort destroy an SA3 radar!! (i dont agree that my flight should have taken harms.) we lost 3 out of 4 to enemy sams. 3. maybe adding spare waypoints along the flight plan somewhere to be used when mobile sams are located and co-ordinates shared would be a good tactic. 4. using harms on sa13 is a total waste, its below 15,000feet and a HQ battalion usually has 3 or more. 5. Awacs could/should play a more controlling role, i got caught completely by surprise when i asked awacs if we should engage and got the response "its up to you".
Finally: It was a good mission, busy and enjoyable. it was definitely possible from my perspective, especially with 8 pilots and an awacs for both teams, i dont understand why both "teams" found it so difficult.
