At the half way point , the team scores are :

  • 1ST 1.5 PIE led by Reaps 266 points
  • 2ND Blues led by Tracer 239 points
  • 3RD BGees led by Bigbrother 175 points

No change at the top this week with 1.5 PIE opening up a 27 point lead. On what was quite a challenging airfield denial mission, both 1.5 PIE and Blues returned a mission success with no losses, Bgees again found things more difficult but still recorded a partial success. Blues again achieved their success with a 3 man team. Very well flown to you all.

By the way, I am sure we would all like to know just how you managed to pull this one off, so please feel free to post a mission narrative here, I am sure it would make interesting reading for all in what was quite an action packed engagement by all accounts.

Team scores 1.5 PIE 67 points, Blues 56 points, BGees 32 points.

Good luck for the second half.

Halfway Statistics:

Team average mission score 56.66 points
Highest score 1.5 PIE 82 points (mission 2)
Lowest score BGees 32 points (mission 4)

Leading individual contributions (total points):-
  • Mephisto 75
  • Ballistic 70
  • Weezer 70
  • Badger 66
  • Tracer 65
  • Goose 61

Leading individual contributions (average points per mission flown, minimum 3)
  • Stingray 19
  • Mephisto 18.75
  • Ballistic 17.5
  • Weezer 17.5
  • Badger 16.5
  • Tracer 16.25

For those of you who are interested in more detail, Sabre has agreed to make the scoring spreadsheet available for download. This should appear shortly.

We decided right away to select a little different route and flew along the west coast. We allso flew VERY low and jammer and radar snoozed. That put as in the position to attack the target from the west, probably avoided most of the A-A that way to.
Made not exactly an scool example by doing four passes over the target..but I took the chance and avoided a couple of SA3 launches :-)

On the way home everything was calm.
Great mission BTW.

Hello all,

In response to PJC's request: Here are the events from my point of view.

At first we expierenced some technical difficulties as our team (BB, Ktel, Turnburn and me) was not quite complete at Wednesday evening. Turnburn had to request a LOA, since he was in Spain for business. Hammer agreed to step in, instead of Turnburn. Unfortunately, things did not quite work out, perhaps because Hammer is on dial-up while these missions were designed for broadband.

Once Hammer decided that he would not want to spoil our evening by forcing us to apply for a reflight due to Tech issues, we all rebooted and decided to use Ventrilo for flight comms (since everyone but Hammer was able to use it on their respective systems).

Ventrilo worked excellent during the mission. No stuttering occured an there seems to be less lag between the instance a message is sent and received. The only downside we could find is that the comms sounded quite robotic if you will, RW has more of an 'authentic' feeling to it. Perhaps using another codec for transmissions would solve that.

The sortie was directed against On'chon airbase on the west coast of North Korea, about 40mi. southwest of P'yongyang. The mission objective was to take out 5 High Value Assets:

- Rwy 02/22L
- Rwy 02/22R
- Control Tower
- Ammo Dump
- Fuel Tank

Targets included 2 SA2s on the ingress route, 1 SA6 at or around the egress point, SA3s, SA8s and SA16s and AAA north-northwest of the target site.

ROE were to only engage Air to Air targets when declared hostile by AWACS or after a VisID.

The actual mission started with the flight (including one AI wingman) sitting on the ramp. Seats were filled as follows:

Talon Flight (Escort) consisting of 4xF15C Eagles.
Gator fligh (SEAD Strike) consisting of 4xF4G Phantoms.
Cobra flight (OCA Strike)
11 BigBrother
12 Goose
13 Ktel
14 Artificially Ignorant Wingman

Loadouts:

Cobra 11
4x AIM120
6x BLU107
2x 370 Gallon ext. fuel tank
1x ALQ 131

Cobra 12
5x AIM120
1x HARM
6x BLU107
1x ALQ131

Cobra 13
4x AIM120
6x BSU49
2x BSU50
1x ALQ131

Cobra 14
2x AIM120
2x AIM9
2x AGM154
2x BSU50

PS. I am not too sure about the Air to Air complement, for 11, 13 and 14, could have very well been another combination of AIM120s and AIM9s, A-G loadout is on the money though.

Targets were assigned as follows

Cobra 11: Rwy22L
Cobra 12: Rwy22R, SA6 (if still active at IP)
Cobra 13,14: Control Tower, Ammo Dump, Fuel Tank

The flight profile was High Low High.

We taxied out to Rwy18 on Seoul Airbase. We did abstain from formation takeoffs, instead I took off after a 20 second delay had passed. Forming up Northwest of Seoul, we headed in wedge formation towards the target site.

Joining up with the F15s and F4Gs at the push point (Sp2) we pressed to sp3. The F15s did a great job, taking out a 4 ship of Mi29s that were hot for us between sp2 and sp3. After the run in with the Mi29s, the F4Gs took out the two SA2 sites which were located around sp3. The F4Gs performed above expectation because they were tasked as a SEAD Strike to our package in stead of as a SEAD Escort.

Upon passing sp3 BB called for an status update on the SA6, which turned active, painting BB. I told him that I got a good lock on the SA6 with my HARM and requested permission to fire. 10-15 Seconds after I called 'Harm Away' the Straight Flush radar was history. By now we had arrived on the IP. BB decided that an attack heading of 220 was called for. As he did that I stayed on his wing to complete the attack by swinging in from the South. Still in wedge formation, BB flew up on Rwy22L, but was picked off by the SA8. I flew up on Rwy22R, coming in low with a pair setting on the SMS page. Pickling three pairs on the center section of the rwy in CCIP. By now the SA8 shifted its attention to me (within 20 seconds) and fired a missile at me. I saw it flying towards my cranium and with a hard break to the west and dropping CMS like crazy, I managed to evade the missile.

As the battalion which contained the SA8s, 16s and AAA was positioned to the north-northwest of the target, I found myself out of the lethal range of the SA8 within seconds. I set up a holding pattern west of sp 6 and called out 4xOSAII patrol boats which I spotted in the water.

During our engagement of the runways, Ktel directed his wingman to attack the fuel tank with his JSOW, but the wingie fancied damaging a shop and commercial building over following orders. Ktel himself went in with the BSU50s to attack the control tower (attack heading 225 lining the Control Tower and Fuel Tank up for a CCIP release). However he was hit by debris when he did not maintain enough clearance from the frag pattern or was not fast enough to get out of the way.

I tried to direct he AI wingman to engage the remaining targets (ammo dump, control tower and fuel tank) with his remaining BSUs and/or JSOW. This was however no good, because the AI kept jinking due being under almost continuous fire of the SAM units. He was hit eventually.

From that moment I called RTB and proceeded heading South West. After succesfully evading a SA3 missile, I headed towards Seoul Airbase. The rest of the flight to homeplate was uneventful.

I declared a fuel emergency as I was by now down to 1400 pounds and landed at Rwy18.

To conclude: what have I learned?

- Flying an attack heading perpendicular to the rwy heading would have been a viable alternative;
- If I had taken a Maverick along for the fuel tank (instead of the AIM120) I would have been able to take it out in the same pass;
- SA8s are deadly;
- I should turn down AI voice comms, as they tend to drown out Ventrilo during flight.

Regards,

Goose
