Repost from :May 26 Hi Guys I have currently a 1,7Ghz AMD PC in my hand to be used as our dedicated server. To get it up and run,we need to buy/or if someone in the squad have a 200-250 Gb HDD just laying around, then we get it even cheaper. We need also to upgrade the RAM its currently have 512Mb
but will be running better with 1 Gb RAM or more of course

I found this on Komplett sweden
Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 250GB IDE ATA/133 8MB 7200RPM= 75:euros
Kingston ValueR. DDR2 PC5300 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched ValueRAM 1024MB DDR2= 72:euros

That makes it 147 euros and we are on!
please guys lets have your inputs on this

Jun 12:OK Guys I have the stuff now,New HDD and 1 Gb memory!!!! inclusive OS installed.Totally it came to 120 euros. Now we shall hook it up to our broadband/fibrenet.The server will be standing in a techshed below our aerial,From where we provide all clients from.According to our tech guy he will try to hook it on straight to the net,we can't say for the moment what speed we will get but I'am convinced that we won't be disappointed.

With that server, does it mean that we are gonna be able to fly with 12-16 acft at the same time? Oh, it would be really cool two flights flying together...16 F-16s...

Canīt wait!

tiag, it rather needs a lot of cpu power than a lot of bandwidth (5 player in online campaign, upload peak on server side @ 30kb/s)

i dont know on what kind of server/link the intersqn flights have been done, but they worked very very well in TEs just full of ground and air units and 12 human pilots. so 16 human pilots at the same time shouldnt be a problem.

but itll be hard to find 16 pilots from the 185th at the same time, unless its sunday evening :/

really, Medic? I did not imagine that the server in F4 really needs CPU power. Do you have any numbers/tests on that? Well, but may be we can try on a Sunday TE.

Cheers

numbers/test, yes, see in the post above. i was running a server and flew with 4 pilots, so a total of 5. while flying i measured the bw (upload to be exact) and it really doesnt take a huge line to run a good server.

the peak upload hit 30 kb/s, average was 20 kb/s for 4 clients. 2-3 mbit upload host should be good for 16 players and a good fluent game.

it is more about ip-routing in general as this will also have effects on the game/weapons/and so on.

imho ping times and cpu have a much higher effect on any erros in the game than anything else

oh and yeah..... if your game gets stick just for a milliseconds due to computer reading from disk (encoutered MAJOR readings from disc on windows xp mc), this will cause also weapons missing targets even tho they hit the target *lol*

Hi guys so generally in a perfect world(which we unfortunally not live in) we should have 4 Gb memeory + Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.67GHz Socket LGA775, 8MB or some other high end CPU,so the pc don't need to access the HDD at all???

nope. not saying that tracer. dont "over"-interpret my posting.

just wanted to say that windows xp pro + af works fine on my computer. for whatever reason, windows xp mc + af on the very same computer was unplayable ;)

I am of the understanding that AF is one of the few games currently available that takes advantage of dual-core CPU's especially in Campaign mode- if it's not too late to consider?

With XP Professional and as much RAM as possible it should be good to go

I have a Intel Duo Core+2Gb Ram+1950GT. If I run AF in just one processor, my frames go from 66fps to 45fps over Seoul, everything at maximum detail. I read something that the flight model would be running in one CPU and the rest in the other one....Iīm not sure.

If you want, Medic and Jester, we could make a test with my 384upload connection and my PC, then I would "turn one CPU off" for AF and see what happens. We just need some volunteers.

no problem. you can also monitor the bandwidth (bw will most definitely stay the same, no matter what bw setting u select in game)

yup sounds good, I did notice an improvement going from a single core Athlon to my current X2; the flight model and all external campaign/TE objects are split onto separate cores, as far as I'm aware.
