STOP THE ROCKETS!!

Hezbollah and Syrian forces have moved to the Israel-Lebanon border and, from this position, they have been launching rockets on Israeli civilian population centers. This has become our top priority. Intelligence has identified the general area of the BM21 launchers, but they are always moving.

We are tasked to destroy the ground forces present in the kill box, with highest attention given to BM21 launchers. These troops are supported by an armored brigade, it should be the secondary goal.

Please note that, while overall the package is tasked as Interdiction, Serpent1 is tasked as SEAD/SWEEP to reduce air defenses and protect the package from enemy air.

The package will consist of 3 flights: 1 SEAD/SWEEP and 2 AI flights – objectives are:

  • COWBOY1 – Destroy enemy ground units -- Departs from the 107th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with CEM CBUs

  • PANTHER1 – Destroy enemy ground units -- Departs from the 107th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with CEM CBUs

  • SERPENT1 – Engage air defences N of the kill box. Should act as escort for Interdiction flights -- Departs from the 4329th @ Hatzerim -- Payload is free = currently loaded with AGM88s

Timings:

Flight Task TO PP TOT IDM VHF	TACAN	FL

COWBOY1 AI 16:16 16:28 16:35 1 1	16/79	200
PANTHER1	AI 16:18 16:28 16:37 2 2	11/74	220
SERPENT1	AI(SEAD)	16:14 16:28 16:36 3 3	21/84	270

Research the BM21 to ensure ID of these priority targets .

Mission success:
COWBOY1: 50% units hit for ordnance expended.
PANTHER1: 50% units hit for ordnance expended.
SERPENT1: 50% units hit for ordnance expended, no losses to package from AA or AD threats.

Our job was to atttack air defences in the target area and to the north.
We've found an SA-8, two AAA radars and a SA-2 site. All were destroyed.
After splitting up the element for the CAP we had two MiG-23 flying
towards the area and shot them down. After the AI flights finished their
job we RTBd.

Took off and proceeded to SP3 and went heads down searching for the rocket batt. Failed to find the rocket launchers on all 3 passes, partly due to a comms problem on the victor channel that arose during flight and disabled passing information between flight members. Expended GBUs on the last pass on what we thought were enemies and turned out to be friendlies, "luckily" 2 and myself fired GBUs "Mav style" not waiting for the bomb to hit before locking up a new target and hence missing more friendlies. Which was the first lesson of the evening for us.We then called Panther in and had to RTB without giving them cover because we were short of fuel.
Other lessons: Keeping close contact with flight while searching for targets. I should have made sure everyone had the killbox on HSD ,in briefing. Better to take more fuel than less specially on a multi pass mission like this, 8 GBUs!?=more or less 8 passes.

We took off and fell behind Cowboy 1 once they took off. We held while Cowboy searched for and engaged ground targets.

When called in, we were 40 miles away from the target so suggested Cowboy continues their attack. Once they were out, we went in, was able to ID the artillery launchers after a while, and began the engagement. #1 had a couple of dry passes, while #2 had more success.

On my 3rd pass I became target fixated on the TGP image/MFD for too long and couldn't recover from the dive, crashing into the ground.

In the end, the 142nd artillery batallion was down to 4 trucks, with all the BM21s taken out.
