Command has recognised the impact you have made north of our border on ground troops, in particular the significant reduction of the enemy's SA-8 capability.

Now they have need of you in the east. Two airbases will get your attention this time out. These are As Suwayda West, the host of a squadron of Mi24 helicopters and Marj Ruhayyil, where Mi24 and MiG23s are based. You are tasked with destroying the runway and any other assets at those locations, in particular the radar and ammo stores.




The image above shows the flight paths for all in this package. You can see known SA-2 positions, although these are believed to be inoperable. There may be other air defences at the targets and the SEAD escort shall need to clear the route for the two strike flights.

Panther 1 and Snake 1 are from the 107th squadron and Stud 1 is from the 4329th squadron both at Hezarim AB.

Package 9018
Panther 1 and Snake 1 are four ship OCA flights. MS is for destruction of the runway, radar and ammo dump at each destination. PS will be awarded if the runway is completely destroyed.

IDA will be from Stud 1.

Stud 1 is the four ship SEAD escort and Package Commander.
MS is no radar SAM losses or air to air losses to the strike flights. PS is given for two strike aircraft shot down in whatever manner.


Timings

TO for Panther 1 is 12:40hrs with PP at 12:55 at FL250. TOT is 13:03. IDM 1, VHF 1, tacan 11/74.

TO for Snake 1 is 12:38hrs with PP at 12:53 at FL260. TOT is 12:58. IDM 2, VHF 2, tacan 16/79.

TO for Stud 1 is 12:36hrs with PP at 12:50 at FL270. IDM 3, VHF 3, tacan 21/84.

Flight path is fixed for mutual support.

The weather is poor at home plates and fair at the target.

Weapons choice is free, although the use of HARMs should be minimised where possible to save stocks.

The border with Jordan has been highlighted in your data package. DO NOT CROSS INTO JORDON.

Due to the hectic nature of the air picture and high possibility of getting bounced in this Theatre it is highly recommended that every aircraft carries at least 1x heater. It is also extremely important in this Theatre to maintain a good visual lookout, both to identify potential conflicting traffic that could cause a mid-air and to get a tally on any WVR bandits that may not have been picked on by other means.

Recommend reading My post on Tactical/SOP lessons and Pages 22-24 of 16v5, which talk about visual lookout and the ROCKS lookout method.

I'd also recommend that Flight Leads select a Flight formation to provide effective mutual support should they be bounced.

MS

Ingress up to IP went as fragged, then we found the SA17 near the Tgt STP, so Lead and 2 employed Wild-weasel so 3 could engage it. This worked and 3 managed a kill on it. Lead then spotted a SA6 to the east of Tgt, which was in the inner circle and singing, so fired one HARM at it, destroying a launcher. At this point, 3 picked up a Mig21 4-ship coming from the north, along with a SU24 4-ship. Since they were hot and would factor on Snakes attack, we sprinted for them to push them off, but seconds after going hot, Lead picked up 2 more Mig21 spikes at his 4 o'clock. Lead knocked off the initial engagement and called a hook right to defend against a flank attack and launched 2 slammers at one of the groups, but as this happened, 2 gave a Fox-3 close call and 3 called contacts on the nose and low. Lead went inverted and saw the danger as a second Mig21 4-ship had sneaked up on us and were attacking from below. Lead got on the 6 of one, which was threatening Echion, but was too close for slammers. But just before switching to guns, he entered cloud and lost the mig. From here it all got very hectic, with I think both flights engaged inseperate fights with up to 5 groups. The air picture was total carnage and more migs were seen taking off from nearby airports. Stud lost Echion to one of the migs and whilst bugging out, Mango called out 2 mig21 spikes up close on his 6. Lead turned to delouse and killed one of the migs, but got hit in the process. With no MFDs or UFC navigation, Lead attempted to limp home, but an engine fire denied him this and his plane exploded. Although this was a MS, with no losses to SAMs, it feels like a MF, since we lost 3 aircraft to enemy air. That said, it was a good mission with excellent comms and despite the losses, some really good flying against superior numbers (2 losses for 5 enemy air and 4 Sam kills).

MF

The first half of the missing was uneventful.

While in hot on the target, I released all of my bombs on the briefed steerpoints, but one way or the other, they all went for the same target.

Zipgun, trying to visually confirm his AG targets, got too close on his targets, and had to have another pass. He did in total 2 more passes and took out all his targets.

While out, heading towards stpt 10, we had nails 23 from north. Since we knew that Stud was engaged to the east, my reasoning was that we should take out the 23s, so they weren't flanked.

So we turned hot, we sorted and fired. However, my lock dropped and when I re-acquired I went for the same target as Zipgun.

Reviewing the ACMI there were 2 Mig23 2-ships, so there were 4 aircraft and on the first engagement only 1 was shot down.

Zipgun turned back hot trying to clear my six but got shot head-on, while managing to take out 2.

Aftewards, I took out the remaining Mig23 and I RTBed.

With all the losses, there still is one runway segment left.

Good mission as far as surprises go, but poor results overall.
