185th ITO CAMPAIGN – MISSION 18

“Gentlemen! Let's plough the road!”
Now the the Western AO has stabilised, with ground units steadily advancing north into Syrian territory, Israeli/NATO Coalition Command wishes to open a second front in the East, pushing towards Damascus, in the heart of Syria. To that end, airstrikes will shortly commence, paving the way for a ground advance.

In preparation for the airstrikes, we are tasked with clearing out any Surface To Air threats in and around Damascus.

Several SA2 Battalions can be seen in the area around Damascus, but these have been neutralised by previous DEAD strikes and no longer have Fan Song vehicles. Consequently, they sohuld be treated as Secondary targets only. Priority should be given to higher value threats which are still able to track incoming aircraft, in particular, intelligence sources suggest a high probability of the presence of at least one SA17 battery. All flights are to consider any such “pop-up” threats as a high priority target.

PACKAGE 22529

The package will consist of 2 DEAD flights and an ESCORT Flight. Specific objectives are:

  • PRIMARY : SA17

  • SECONDARY: SA2

  • TERTIARY: All other SAM/AAA (only if no higher-priority targets)

Flight Plan:

Package Cdr/DLink: SATAN 11

NOTAMS:
1. Weapon choice is free. Poacher and Nightmare are currently loaded with AGM88. Flight Leads should consider the high likelihood of a SA17 threat in the AO when considering specific loadouts.
2. One or more of the DEAD flights may jettison stores and assist SATAN1 on the authority of Pkg Cdr.
3. To ensure sufficient play time, a KC 135 Tanker aircraft, c/s CAMEL 1 is on station over Haifa from 1756 hrs.

RESULTS:

MS:
No losses to enemy air threats

PS:
1 loss to enemy air threat.

MF:
>1 loss to enemy air threat.

We held for quite some time in the beginning of the mission.
When we actually went in, Satan was already RTB and Poacher provided cover.

In the beginning it was difficult to engage AG since there were no obvious targets and the enemy kept sending flights south, which we had to engage.

When the skies cleared, we headed towards the target area to engage, only to find no active emitters. Upon overflying the target steerpoint, a couple of SA17s went active with Aim taking one shot.

After getting rid of our AGM88s we RTBed.

A very successful flight, good comms and SA. After an uneventful ingress
and with a short time of clear target area we could start our attack run
on the SAMs (2xSA-17, 1xSA-6, radar).

On a second run #1 and #2 had three SU-22 incoming and could shoot
two of them down. At that time the second element attacked a four
ship MiG-21, killed two and turned cold. First element made a tac
turn left and shot the other two down.

Nightmare1 was waiting for their attack run and after the clearance
of another wave of enemy fighters (most by AI) the first element could
provide some air cover until the flights returned to base.

Plan - Put a N-S CAP in at bottom of kill box. Push CAP North up to top of Box 69 if ground threat allows. Green lane to WSW into Patriot coverage. Plan for Nightmare to go A2A as required followed by Poacher.

Execution

Got ahead of timings to ensure CAP was on station for Poacher1 arrival. Cleared them hot into kill box. When able we pushed CAP North as fragged.

Engagement 1
After a couple of CAP rotations we picked up a 2-ship inbound from the North. Advised Poacher 1 to clear to South and engaged 2x MiG-23. Due to being in CAP, #2 was 15nm trail. #1 pushed in closer to bandits as they were targeting #4 of Poacher1. Fired at 12nm and killed lead bandit with a single Slammer before dragging second bandit back into #2, who killed it with a single Slammer shot.

Engagement 2
Turning hot again Flight was aware of a second 4-ship group of Su-22 inbound from the North. Lead killed one with a single Slammer shot as did #2. By this time Lead had requested A2A support and as Poacher1 second element were DAKOTA they supported, killing the two remaining Su-22.

Engagement 3
Turning hot behind Poacher1 to support, we continued hot after they killed the last 2x Su-22. We were tracking 6 bandits, 2x Mig-21 and 4x Su-22. The 2x MiG-21 turned off to the left and #2 engaged, killing one of them with another Slammer. Lead engaged the lead Su-22, killing it with a Slammer. By this time all 4 of Poacher1 were A2A and came in to support as we went cold. The remaining bandits in those two groups were splashed.

Engagement 4
Once clear we turned back hot to support and engaged a 4-ship of Su-24, which we didn't realize at the time were also being engaged by an AI flight. We both fired two Slammer, #1 killed one and damaged another that had been hit by the AI flight already. #2 killed one bandit and missed with the other Slammer that had also been hit by an AI. End result was all 4 Su-24 destroyed.

Egress
At this point both #1 and #2 were bingo weapons (1x heater each remaining) and bingo fuel so we continued cold for egress and #1 handed package lead over Poacher1. We landed from base onto 32R.

Points
Excellent comms and coordination between Flights
"Cascade A2A" worked well
