Posted - 23 Feb 2009 : 10:41:58 Command are delighted to announce the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ballistic for his selfless flying during Sunday's mission, Black Canyon.
Congratulations Ballistic, it is well deserved.
Citation:
Ballistic distinguished himself on 22 February 2009 flying the F16C-30 in a mission codenamed Black Canyon in the European campaign.
On that date Ballistic, was the No 4 aircraft of Cowboy1, an Escort flight. During egress Cowboy1 were engaged by a group of MiG-29A armed with semi-active missiles while Cowboy1 had IR missiles only. During the engagement No 1 and No 2 were shot down and No 3 was badly damaged. Despite this Cowboy1 managed to defeat the bandits with Ballistic showing a high level of skill by destroying the remaining MiG with guns once he was out of missiles.
Ballistic was escorting the badly damaged Cowboy13, Blackbird, back to home plate when he was notified of another 2-ship MiG-29A group intercepting them. With his aircraft out of missiles and Cowboy13 crippled and unable to outrun the MiGs, Ballistic could have turned for home but instead he turned into the MiG-29 group and engaged them. He was shot down by a semi-active missile but his act helped ensure his Element Lead was able to land safely.
For his selfless, voluntary action that was above and beyond the call of duty as a wingman and represents the finest traditions of 185th VFS co-operative flying, Ballistic is hereby awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

WOW - Thanks Guys and BlackBird congratulations on getting that bird home, under the circumstances you did a hell of a job mate. Thanks for putting me forward for this award.
Regards, Ballistic
No problem of putting you forward, you did sacrifice your own jet to give me a chance of getting back home! It is more than logic to put you forward, it's the least I could do back for you
Congratulations

Posted - 26 Feb 2009 : 10:32:42 Just read through the awards sop page, couldn't see either Purple Heart or Airman's Medal in the list, or any other that fits the bill.

It was gripping stuff to listen to. I was on the edge of my seat right up til you landed that crippled bird Blackbird. Amazing to have avoided the bullets from not 1, not 2 but 3 mig29's on your tail, on a good day. But to do it when you have no avionics and the aircraft will only roll to the right you must have the luck of the devil! And then you landed it!!
And Ballistic if that's how you look after 'your boys' I'm proud to be in your flight mate.

It sounds to me that on that basis Blackbird should be up for at least a Purple Heart/Airman's Medal for getting that viper home.
