Balkans V4.3

BMS 4.34.4

Objective

We need to destroy the two enemy airbases, Batajnica and Nikola Tesla Airport, to the NE in Serbia in order to achieve air dominance. Before we can do this however we need to prepare the way. Destroying the runway at Dolac airbase will neutralise the MiG-21 threat from there and only leave the two airbases in Serbia for the enemy to launch aircraft from. Additionally there are believed to be 2 SA-6 operating just inside the Serbian border that need to be destroyed in order to clear the route to the Serbian Airbases.

Package 838

BANSHEE6 - DEAD/Escort - 4x F-16C-50. Escort Strike then DEAD 2x SA-6.

COBRA7 - OCA Strike/Escort - 4x F-16C-50. Destroy runway and other high priority targets at Dolac airbase then provide Escort while BANSHEE6 engage SA-6.

MS: Dolac 0% operational & if SA-6 location identified, at least 1xStraight Flush and 2x SA-6 launchers destroyed. No losses to package from enemy action.

PS: Dolac 0% operational & if SA-6 location identified, at least 1x Straight Flush destroyed. Maximum 1 loss to package from enemy action.

PS

Game plan:
20NM separation between elements, sanitize over Dolac airport and clear the strike in. Cobra7 to have their own 2nd element as close escort and then provide ourselves with an escort while we're working SEAD.

Execution:
Took off with a few tech issues from #2 but then sorted.
Nothing on ingress. Once feet dry still picture clear then coming on Dolac #2 picked up bandit low Mig-21, dispatched. The picture was clear and strike flight was cleared in.

Flat faces were coming on and off, then straight flush from western SA-6 came up. Target was spotted moving, #1 and #3 poked but no launch, #2 and #4 stayed heads up until Cobra7 would confirm then have the air cover. 2x Magnums, one hit one miss. #3 relayed markpoint to the rest of the flight for the mavericks to rain. Cobra7 now heads up.
#1 went to check on eastern SA-6, brief spike but then quiet. Cobra7 was calling joker, so we decided to only focus on western SA-6. Once we finished the job, called miller time and uneventful egress to home plate. Straight in recovery.

PS

Flight setup in elements with 15nm trail for the approach to Dolac airbase. 2nd element to provide watch for scramblers from Dolac while Banshee6 provided high cover, as the first element bombed the runway.

Lead missed the approach angle to Dolac and had to take a 2nd attempt to get lined up. A pair of Mig-21s were bombed by lead on the threshold. Lead got hit by a manpad and ground fire on egress and had to eject in hostile territory. #2 made a successful bombing run and escaped.

#3 and #4 now continued in for their bombing run, taking out further airbase structures.

For the rest of the mission, air cover was provided for Banshee6 as they attacked SA-6 targets.

RTB to alternate due to fuel level. #2 returned to the alternate-alternate.

Lessons learned.
1: Do effective recon on the target, including identifying approach angle cues to assist getting lined up for runway bombing.
2: When setting out to do low level bombing, set up a flare-heavy EWS program to avoid manpads.
3: When assigning precision steerpoints for GPS guided munitions, I have had no problems using #99, #98 etc. Using #15, #16 etc can cause problems if extra NAV steerpoints are added after the precision steerpoints are configured.
4: It would have been a good idea to hand-off intra-package comms to #3 when #1 was on bombing run to avoid task overload.
5: When returning to land, it is handy to switch to NAV master mode (and Cursor Zero) to get the steerpoint diamond on the airbase to assist in positive identification.
6: Have a printout of the home airbase to assist with taxiing.
