Posted - 18 Mar 2021 : 17:24:57 The 185th VFS have been posted to Brindisi Casale airbase in SE Italy to help in the campaign against the Serbian invasion of Albania. You are to be embedded as part of 22nd squadron of F-16C-50s.

Your first mission is a long one to put Ponivke airport out of action. It is home to fighter and attack aircraft and neutralising this base will hamper the enemy's defensive efforts.
Air threats are varied and range from MiG-21 to MiG-29s.

Your package is tasked with destroying the active runway (12/30) at Ponikve Airport, destroying the covering SA-2s and attrition of other ground assets as required.
It is known that among the identified static SAM sites are SA-4 and 6 units, which could be along your route.
PACKAGE 856 OCA Strike - Cajun 6 - 2 x F-16C-50, IDM 11 and 12, TACAN 11X and 74X SEAD/AI - Satan 6 - 4 x F-16C-50, IDM 21 to 24, TACAN 12X/Y and 75X/Y Escort - Plasma 2 - 4 x F-16C-50, IDM 31 to 34, TACAN 13X/Y and 76X/Y
MS Criteria - Ponikva runway destroyed, No radar SAM losses, max of two losses to package from aircraft.
PS Criteria - Ponikva runway destroyed, one loss to radar SAMs, max four losses to package from aircraft.
Results Flight Leads in this Sunday's official mission, "Under Siege 01" are requested to post a debrief of their flight's actions, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.

Ingressed just behind Escort who got a flash of an SA-6 going feet dry but nothing showed up for SEAD.
In range of target #2 and #3 engaged Northern and Southern SA-2 with SDB, both neutralized. #1 engaged Fire Can over target but HARM missed. West of target momentary SA-6 spike. With MiG-29 inbound from North and MiG-21 scrambling from target airfield, #1 instructed flight to flow South for separation and to re-group and support Escort as required. #3 reported hit and #2 also destroyed. At debrief confirmed they were shot down by Plasma 21.
#1 joined with Cajun62 and deloused Plasma 21, Cajun had 2xMiG-29 group to left, Satan had group to right. Fired but bandit dragged shot out. Cajun then merged with multiple bandits, #1 fired 2 shots, one defeated by bandit, other splashed a MiG-29.
Cajun was shot down in the furball, Satan6 and Plasma2 turned cold, with Plasma2 Winchester. 2x MiG-29 spikes to NW so Satan6 turned hot to delouse, fired remaining Slammer. Preparing to merge, bandit was splashed.
Both aircraft now Winchester and SATAN61 fuel critical opportunity was taken to egress. Further inner ring MiG-29 spike 50nm from home plate but was chased off by other friendlies.
Emergency landing due to fuel critical joining on right base for a visual approach.

Late departure due to tech issues from #2 (hot start?), joined back on spare jet. We were ahead of the package, so we turned back and ended up on top of SATAN6. As we got feet dry we were briefly spiked by an SA-6 (at Dubrovnik airport), reported to SEAD flight and were told to continue. As we progressed in enemy territory we were getting multiple "F" spikes but none appeared in the inner circle. AWACS called a group on the E, no factor. Airspace 80NM around was sanitized so the SEAD moved in. Only a singleton MiG-29 was tracking N as we turned cold on our 1st CAP leg, #3 monitored. On our 2nd hot leg I picked up a 2ship taking off from the airfield and launched 2 slammers dispatching both. CAJUN6 was cleared hot. Turning cold picture was 1 new group N, 4x Mig-29 that was quickly joined by another 4x Mig-29 also from the N. At the same time a 2ship Mig-21 was scrambling from the airbase. SATAN6 was now W/NW of our CAP and nailed by 29. 1st error: I should've called SATAN6 to go S earlier to avoid having them between us and anything coming from the N. As we turned hot my plate got really full, really quick. As I was in TWS, I TMS up, declared hostile, assigned to Scooter and then TMS right, pickle (2 times). That cycled to the nearest "contact" which was SATAN62 and SATAN63 and not the Mig-29 group in front. Scooter's missile did not track. I had no idea until debrief that this happened. Asked if anyone of our flight had eyes on the airbase, negative. I quickly turned cold to now deal with the 21 nails. 2nd error: one of us should have had eyes on the airbase at all time. I was able to pick up the 2x Mig-21 chasing CAJUN62, declared hostile, 2x fox-3 but snipped. #3 stayed hot and due to tech issues he ended up with 8x MiG-29, managed to dispatch 2 of them as he regained control but also got splashed, he managed to eject. 2 groups now remaining: 2x Mig-29 on the E and 4x Mig-29 on the W. Committing on E group, #1 was winchester and #2 could not get a shot, he broke MAR and got shot down. #1 requested delouse, CAJUN62 and SATAN61 came to the help but CAJUN62 merged with 3 of the 29s. Both Vosene and I were now winchester and getting low on fuel, still nailed by 29s, with 21s on the E but making a run for it. As we got feet wet, a singleton 29 nailed us, and we considered the merge but another flight of F-16A took care of it. Finally, we were safe.
Combat descent and declared emergency, following Vosene in. Landed on runway 23 with a bit of a crosswind...
I enjoyed this mission, but it definitely pushed me over my limits as a flight lead, apologies again to Mango and Gekko.

PS
Stayed in trail of the two escort flights with little to concern us until about 40 miles from target. As the escort dealt with air threats and the SEAD dealt with SAMs and AA we were advised to hold about five miles before we were due to descend to NoE. We turned north and immediately were caught up in flak. We jinked and climbed and soon after clearing it we were told our route was clear.

We went into 2 mile trail, 30° nose down, throttle idle towards our IP. The cloud was thick and we put radar altimeter on. It was a good move as we could have flown straight into a hillside otherwise. Visibility was incredibly poor.

We were down low when I was alerted to MiG-21s taking off from the target. We were so close that we had to blow through. I evaded a missile then searched for the target.
I made the error of going too slow and Fisty couldn't help but overtake me. We both ended up over the target at the same time. I was also too high. Fisty made a successful attack, destroying two sections of runway. I called that I would go around and try again, but the thick AAA cut me down and I ejected.

Fisty joined up with Vosene and Noodle but was shot down by a MiG-29A for his efforts.
A good mission I thought, and the added weather effects made a massive impact on immersiveness.
