Flight leads in this Sunday's official campaign mission, "Korean 4.33 Part 5" are requested to post a debrief of their flights actions, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.

We arrived in the pit on the taxi way behind an AI flight of 4, to the news that there was an enemy package inbound our location. On hearing this we skirted around the AI flight, dispensing with pre-flight checks in order to get airborne ASAP. Once airborne we turned South West to gain altitude and separation. On turning back North we found no threats.
Enroute to enemy coast we had various mig-29 spikes to our East towards Seoul. One pair came quite close, causing us to turn West for separation, before turning North once more once they bugged out.
On reaching the enemy coast line there were no SA-2 indications on the HAD, but there were 2 SA-5 indications coming from further inland. We launched a HARM each on the 2 patrol boats near the coast, which both missed, and a HARM each at the 2 X SA-5 sites. The HARMs each hit and destroyed the 'Square Pair' radar located at the SA-5 sites, degrading them both to 88%, however the Barlock-B's are both still operational.
Avenger 4 then turned South for the trip home. We jettisoned tanks etc and called on Uniform that we were Dakota and available to support any other flights in A2A.
Viper 42 called on Uniform that they had some contacts and gave a bullseye location. This appeared to us to be amongst the package flights, we didn't have time to come to any further conclusion as we were then fired on by Viper 43, causing us to take evasive action. The missile was initially fired at Avenger 42, who was able to defeat it, but it then went on to acquired Avenger 41 and destroyed him.
Now a singleton in an environment with poor UHF comms and his lead having been shot down by a friendly, Avenger 42 elected to return to base immediately.

Regarding targets and mission, interesting point for discussion here. As far as I'm aware the SA-2 units never went active. As all flights took HARMs we weren't able to engage and that caused Flights to fire at targets of opportunity, which may have been assigned targets for other flights. Looking at the debrief I see one flight has put the mission as DEAD and two as SEAD.
I believe the mission we had was DEAD ie Destruction of Enemy Air Defences not just Suppression and against assigned targets that were static SAMs that should have driven the loadout mix. For example SDBs could have been used to target the radar and SA-2 launchers, regardless of whether the units went active or not.
Food for thought when planning future missions as we get used to operating in the 4.33 environment.

We were the last flight to takeoff. Griffin called it a Tech because his BMS
crashed (probably network problems) and #2 took lead. With the radar
cursor frozen, i've fired the HARMs in POS, but both missed.
#3 attacked targets of opportunity, because the briefed target was
attacked by Avenger flight.
On the way back #3 shot down a MiG-29.
Pre-mission planning for the package was not detailed enough to avoid
target mismatch, comms (missing offensive, defensive, attacking calls).
Two main targets, the 200th and 201st ADB, are still 100%. |

Ingress as fragged, We did pick up an unescorted 4xSU-25 we handed off to Avenger: No threat to us so we skipped.
Push point had element engaging 2x OsaII, and SA-2, SA-4, Firecan and a Search radar. All targets engaged succesfully, search radar still up. Primary targets hit.
Set up a grinder from our fallback steerpoint in a unclear air picture (no AWACS). Flexibility was needed from the pilots and we gregrouped succesfully: CAP after 10 mikes the package was egressing and we headed to home plate.
Picked up a four ship MiG-29 on egress chasing friendlies; Vieland had point and shot the greatest threat.
We went gate and CATI and got within WEZ and dispersed of the other 2, aided by a F-4 which dispensed
of one of the MiG-29's.
Clear and Naked we RTB'd.

Good take off, good formation no MUD spikes which kept half the flight heads down longer than necessary and A/A SA suffered. Add to that the lack of AWACS and the poor Uniform comms and we were more dependent on TGP thus putting us in closer to A/A REDs that was ideal.
We all got slammers away and we all hit targets - which is good. Mango and I were chased all the way home at low level - never had Migs chase us so long ...
Straight in landing as we were fuel low.
Flight lesson to learn - don't mix element weapons A/A and A/G - one element A/A and one A/G.
