Flight leads in this Sunday's official campaign mission, "Strong DPRK 4" are requested to post a debrief of their flights actions, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.

Flight Role: SWEEP

Took off and rallied with package en route to target. As we approached the coast we fenced in and started to scan the airspace in south east Korea, all seemed clear so I called the package to press forward.
In true ‘gotcha’ fashion about a minute later Cobra and Avenger started to pick up jamming contacts coming in fast from the northwest towards the target area. I called Avenger to attack while Cobra covered the north east and told the interdiction elements to hold in place and await instructions. Avenger had a really good engagement and did a lot of damage against active shooters. Cobra supported this (with no effect as Avenger had done all the work).
I placed the sweeps in a CAP in place and awaited ‘the wall’, which didn’t take long to arrive. While Cobra and Avenger started to deal with the wall, I called the interdiction aircraft to drop ground stores and swing to A-A and set up a grinder in place while Cobra and Avenger extended toward the south and east.
As Gypsy took the brunt of the next air engagement Cobra and Avenger reset their grinders to support Gypsy. Soon after Avenger called Winchester and RTB’d. Cobra and Gypsy covered their exit and then pushed forward for a little longer (Gypsy took out a couple of SU-25’s) and then RTB’d as we were getting close to joker.
Good Points:
- Package comms were great from all flights despite a lot going on.
- Package rallied in flight and well before the fence in point.
- Package support was excellent.
- Package only lost 1 aircraft despite numerous A-A kills against mostly active shooters.
- Green flights comms were fairly good too (but some chatter still needs to be cut back).
- No one in green flight broke the MAR.
- Green flight No.4 alerted his element lead to breaching MER. I encourage this behaviour strongly. Just because the FL/EL are ‘in the seat’ doesn’t mean they haven’t forgotten something/are doing something wrong. Sabre was very busy dealing with intermittent jamming targets and trying to sort them for his element. Having the no.4 call the MER breach probably saved the element from breaching the MAR. For me, hearing this was one of the main highlights of last night’s flight. GREAT TEAMWORK AND SA SIMPSON!
Not so good points:
- Mission selection seemed to take a fair amount of time.
- Flight leads need to do more to de-conflict the airspace around them – don’t wait for the package commander to do it.
- Selected mission was too optimistic based on previous experiences in this theatre and perhaps was not the highest priority target in the area?
- Green flight needs to work on its formation flying, situational awareness and radio cadence brevity (FL; ‘Do something’ then the immediate response ‘2, 3, 4’) – don’t make the FL ask twice he is really busy at the best of times, more so when commanding a busy package.
Points of note:
- Package landing was very smooth. Perhaps using the package commander to define the landing order while en-route to home plate should be taken forward as part of ‘the routine’?

Mission Outcome: MS
We were the first to engage as directed by the package commander and from there on we were hot & cold engaging and the going cold, trying to keep the enemy off.
At one point, we lost #3 due to a Su30 that snuck up down low while trying to clear #4's tail.
The flight did operate mostly as a 2 x 2ships but considering the circumstances I feel we did a good job.
P.S. The results were all fcked up, so the results I got were from counting kills in the ACMI. Zipgun may have more kills, but we don't have a full acmi. |
