Flight leads in this Sunday's official campaign mission, "Korean Campaign 6" are requested to post a debrief of their flights actions by Tuesday, including any lessons learned or that should be learned by others.

Mission Outcome: MF
After takeoff we had 2 engagements: the first one was Tupolevs escorted by Mig23s which were dispatched swiftly.
The second engagement didn't end so well for me: there was another bomber groups(su25s) escorted by Su27s. When engaging the Su27s, we had to go defensive since they had the longer sticks (and it's a good thing we did, because we had missiles inbound.
The second time we turned hot, because the enemy pilots switched sides, myself and Zipgun, we fired on the same bandit (and killed him), not before shooting at Zipgun. However, the free fighter turned & fired at me, and killed me. |

Plan was to take off and proceed to CAP area and patrol North/South with a 20nm gap between the two elements to ensure we have aircraft pointing nose hot to the north at all times.
As we got towards near our entry point for the CAP there were targets going slowly to the north. It seemed that they were moving out of our kill box and moving towards Lobo's kill box we handed them off to Lobo 9.
We proceeded to our CAP area and quickly encountered the enemy fighter sweep, that appeared (on the RWR) as Mig29's (pre-brief told us that they 29A's). We engaged these targets and disposed of all of them. However, Crowebar traded his aircraft with the Mig-29A he was attacking.
At about this time we got a call from Coyboy flight indicating they we in bad shape with 1 aircraft nose onto enemy aircraft calling for a delouse. I directed Coyboy to green lane towards home plate at gate but it became clear we could not support. Note on me - if you can't support, call it! (Sorry all I was a little over pressed with stuff at that time).
Lobo said he would support and for Python to cover Lobos right of arc. We did our best to do this but had to engage inbound aircraft (Mig-29's ahead of IL-28s). This was the point where Crowbar traded his F16 for his target Mig-29. 1 and 2 came in behind 3 and 4 to support and when the Migs became no factor (dead) 2 engaged the bombers. 1 and 2 then merged with the bombers and we guns on when the call came to knock it off. We quickly got rid of our targets and disengaged.
We RTB'd without incident.
I would like to say well done to the whole flight, comms were really good in a very busy flight. Overall comms for the package was also very good.

Note: Subsequent analysis of Crowbars engagement shows:
a) He was engaging a SU27 active shooter, not a 29A. 
b) The SU27 fired at 21nm from him with a lofted shot.
c) Crowbar fired at 17.3nm
d) Crowbar left his turn away probably until he heard the R77 missile go active, and was too late to do anything.
Lessons from this engagement:
1) Fire first, aim to get your missiles off your rails at 25-20nm at the latest.
2) Beware of your bug out range in complex environments, you never know when you are against active shooters or semi active - so treat them as active until confirmed otherwise.
3) A good tactic vs active shooters is once the missile goes off the rail, immediately execute an off aspect turn (away from the threat) and keep the target at 40-60 degrees on the radar until the missile goes active (you may want think think about the odd bungle of chaff here too). When your missile goes active immediately turn away 180 from target (dispense some chaff) and run at full speed and wait 60 seconds until you are sure an active missile is not chasing you. This tacic is not infallible - but it can save your airframe.
