As mentioned by Zipgun we reversed roles with Lobo on finding ourselves 2nd in the queue on the taxiway behind Falcon. Mission success criteria was dependant on strike flight reaching target and our mission was to escort them so while we initialy tried to keep equal distance between Falcon and Cowboy, as the range between two groups increased to 50 plus miles I decided to cut Falcon loose and escort strike flight. We had no threats on ingress and performed an East - West CAP, to the West of target area while strike was taking place. This left us with our Element in front when we turned West for home. A couple of Mig-29A's came up to take a look at the strike flight, by which time the Element led by Mango (Pilot of the year!! ;-) ) were 10 miles to strike flights 3 oclock. I called this information on U13 and that Fury was engaging. Element took initial shots with lead element taking follow up shots. Migs were quickly eliminated.
I'm not sure that the SEAD needed to be so far ahead as they were, even to get a quick kill on the SA-10. This left them totally unsupported and on their own when mig-23's popped up.
However having said that, they were successful in both defending themselves and carrying out the mission. So therefore surely they must have been well led and done absolutely the right thing. Who knows what the outcome would have been if they flew it differently, and what would have happened with those mig-23's if they were left to manoeuvre and attacked us later in the mission. So well done Black flight.

Our plan from the outset was to climb high and fast and get ahead of caret due to the main threat to the package was the SA10. But to try and stay away from A2A engagements if possible.
Which went pretty much to plan. AWACS giving picture clear almost all the way in. #2 had just switched A2G to search for the SA10 when a flight of MIG23's popped up. Initially I thought about running and letting the escort deal with them but they were too close AND we had to get the SA10 down so couldn't wait.
#2 was closest to the MIGS but both his missiles were spoofed. It was a bit scrappy but eventually #1 getting 2 MIGS & #4 getting 1.
Back to SEAD #2 got the SA10 on the 1st shot but his 2nd missed the SA3 to the East. I fired on that SA3 but my Harm also missed. In the end that SA3 remained active but was no threat to Strike.
The SA2's to the North of the target were quickly destroyed by #3 & 4. A single SA3 still remained to the North destroyed by #1. That left the area clear of SAM's so we turned South.
Once the Runways were hit we started to RTB.
Towards the end of the flight MIG 29's popped up but we turned South West to let the escorts deal with those.
It was the a clear flight home with #3 destroying a SA2 close to one of the alternates in case anyone was low on fuel.
Lessons for me be more decisive when threatened by Enemy aircraft. My flight lead skills are still being tested in the A2A role.
I know some of you were concerned by the fact that we were pushing ahead but IMO that's what we had to do in this case. We couldn't stay too close to the Strike. They were slow with bombs. We needed that SA10 down otherwise it would have been difficult to hit the airfield. Another reason to push, which we discussed as a flight in our planning was the flight time of the Harm to the SA10. We would have to wait 2~3 mins to find out if the SA10 was down. If the 1st Harm had missed it would need to be re-engaged As we all know Harms are not 100%
To answer Zipgun's concerns. Yes we do have a tendency to look for kills outside of our mission brief in the 185th. I don't think we stepped on anyone toes on this one as said in the above paragraph. And I'm not suggesting you are pointing the finger. ME, I'll runaway from an A2A fight every opportunity I get. 
It may have been a quiet mission for some but SEAD had enough for for me  Homer.

We planned to bracket Cowboy between us and Fury, but Fury was airborne first, so there goes the plan. We (I) decided to take the safe, boring route and set the flight into a 20mi box with Cowboy in the middle and let Fury flight sweep in front. We used exceptional formation tactics, only witnessed by God and low flying aliens, to maintain a tidy capsule around our package. The result ... a worry-free flight for our precious cargo.
Now a suggestion ... IMHO, unless threatened, package elements should stick to their mission assignments and "share the wealth" with others. As a newbie to the 185th, I wonder if the CPL or some other motivation drives us to rush ahead guns blazing, while those following the briefed mission watch from afar. I'm just trying to start a discussion here, not questioning the skill and decision-making of others. |

Initially loaded with GBU10's so in theory could target Su33's or runway but Whodat and Dmans suggested we fly low level and kill the runway. Kudos to Dmans1 for insisting that the strike the runway only and come home.
Learning point: Stay focussed on the primary task even when you think you have bombs and aircraft to spare. Actually, only two aircraft were able to release bombs on the target.
Took off and proceeded slowly to target, aircraft close to max weight and unable to make caret speed, however, quick check of the flight plan indicated we could still reach the target in the required time frame.
Wolfman had a technical and rejoined but lost data link.
Lobo flight took out the SA10 on schedule and we proceeded to target.
Sabre came off dry, having dropped tanks, did clear the screens properly, hence no weapons release.
Whodat and Dmans1 in trail did a nice job on the runway rendering Orang airbase 0% operational.
Proceeded home at best speed, en route encountered pair of Mig 29's 50 miles from our steerpoint 9. Whodat and and Dmans1 were in front with Sabre 15 miles in trail, they sorted the targets whilst apparently unware that Fury flight were targetting the same contacts so I asked them to withdraw.
Technically, they were closer to the Mig 29's than Fury and could have taken command of the situation but in the event, Sabre fired the first missile as Whodat and Dmans1 passed beneath me, because Fury had yet to engage.
Sabre reversed and got out of dodge, then every man and his dog launched at the remaining Mig 29, I think Wolfman got the first hit and everyone else hit debris.
Learning point, Whodat had the situation under control and should have made it clear to all flights he was the shooter.
Sabre should have allowed Whodat to continue and just provide support if required. Sorry Whodat and Dmans1.
Proceeded to home plate and safe recovery, although Whodat needed a taxi back to the ramp :)
Curious mission, unusually quiet for a Homer TE but maybe being on target early took the sting out of the enemy.
