Our plan was to Fly LL from stp2. Attack the 3 targets simultaneously dropping a pair of MK84 air on each target.
Went LL at stp2 and was aware of A2A engagements.
We then got Mig29 spikes and I realised we were well ahead of Sead and Escort. I nearly made a fatal error of pushing on. #3 talked me out of it!
On ingress to target 1&2 went for the cement works #3 the power plant. 1st in was #3 unfortunately his bombs missed & AI didn't feel the need to help out. A split second after I released my bombs on my (SECONDRY) target I heard #3 say missed. I instructed #2 to drop 1 bomb on his (primary) target and 1 bomb on #3's (primary) target. And well done to him as he got his 2 hits! But only damaged each.
The lesson here for me was, I should have prioritised the primary targets and held off with my bombs in case of problems, as in this case. If I'd have done that we "could" have had a partial success instead of a failure.
Thanks for a busy mission.

Mission Outcome: MS
Due to the spread and urgent need to take out both SA5, we split the flight into two elements - Jack and I went north, while Mango took the AI in search of the south-most SA5. Both SA5s destroyed without too much drama.
Jack and I engaged the SA6, killing one each, before Jack was killed by an SA11. Mango RTB'd (too busy with SAM coverage to safely make his way north. I returned to the target area to assist with a MiG-29 dogfight and mistakenly downed an F-16, as well as killing one of the MiG-29.
Lesson learned, don't use active missiles in a close in scenario with other friendlies close by. In fact, lesson learned should read - do the assigned and go home!
Really enjoyed this mission, was very busy and kept us on our toes at all times. |
