My thought with this TE was to test inter-flight teamwork, comms and situational awareness in a hectic environment. The Sunday TEs seem to broadly follow a pattern, with Escort and SEAD tasks happening sequentially, across a relatively large area and with occasional overlap between the two tasks. The idea was to appear to follow this pattern, while slightly changing one or two elements to add to the challenge.
I set the mission up so that each flight had, on the surface, a straightforward task.
- Strike flight's task was technical, requiring precision. No problem if they all made it to the target and had no distractions while in hot.
- SEAD only had to deal with a few fixed SAMs (2s and 3s) and a few mobile SA-6s - with 8 HARMS and 8 65Ds, this would not have been a challenge, except for the enemy air assets.
- Escort needed to deal with 19 enemy aircraft, only a few of which were active shooters (I defanged some of the MiG29-Ss). The flight had 24 slammers on board, and could call on the SEAD Escort's 16 slammers if necessary.
In my view, what would made this a worthy challenge was the following:
- The air engagements and SEAD tasks would happen in the same airspace
- The air engagements and SEAD tasks would happen at the same time
- The air threats would converge from different directions, at differing altitudes, at the same time
- AWACS and JSTARS data would be limited
As it turned out we had even more chaos than I was expecting, despite having Vosene doing sterling work as AWACS!
I'm glad you all enjoyed the mission, even if only 3 pilots got back. Now it's off to the drawing board to see what I can come up with next!  |

Took off behind caret, 29 spike on our 6 as we were heading down the runway turbo fast. AWACS asked us to head east to avoid them, we done so and eventually turned toward STP 2 and headed to target area, the group of 29's were no factor, they were headed home.
Approaching target area Griffin and myself charged ahead looking for our first targets, an SA-2 and SA-3, we found them fairly easily and got our first HARMS off and turned off cold to the south to avoid some bad stuff to the north while the escort went ahead. Griffin scored a kill on his Sa-2, I missed the Sa-3.
Second element came in behind us and launched on the first of their targets, an Sa-2 for Vaughan and Sa-6 for Floyd, both missiles hit and destroyed the SAM radars.
We all regrouped just in time to get ambushed by a low level MiG-29S 3 ship the east, 1, 2 and 3 launched SLAMMERS at the inbound group and we all went defensive, we lost Griffin in the smash, and scored two 29 kills. The last 29 was taken out by Floyd, while Vaughan and myself headed north to target area, we ended up following in behind Panther flight as they engaged a 3 ship of 29S, in the big mess that followed, I think most of us got smashed. :>
Floyd is welcome to add anything from this point.
Grand mission from Vorgon, very enjoyable despite the getting smashed part.

Getting annoyed at the SA3 beep, turning handoff off and then not hearing the warning of 2 r77s inbound really didn't help :( |

Soon after takeoff we were tasked to monitor a group of bandits that were aspect cold and flying ahead and parallel to the package. These turned out to be of no significance.
We then orbited near steerpoint 3 to allow Falcon to get ahead and engage SAMs. After a couple of orbits Chalis made all flights aware of developing air picture with threats appearing from all directions around the target area. We were tasked to engage 3 x Mig-19's, which were quickly splashed, and then head East to assist Falcon in an engagement with Mig-29S. Unable to sort on single mig, had a buddy lock on Floyd. But by now a 2nd group of 4 Mig-29S were aproaching from the North East. We turned to engage, 1st Element were in range, 2nd element were further back and supporting. #1 fired two slammers at nearest 2 contacts and turned away, #2 fired on 3rd mig.
Both #1 & #2 ended up too close and paid the price, again! but we also got the migs.
#3 now a singleton was then vectored onto a group of 4 Mig-23's. In this engagement Utopic took out 3 of the 4 Migs. Well done Utopic. The 4th Mig was splashed by others.
Challis then requested #3 to decoy an SA-6 away from the strike flight, but unfortunately #3 was hit by said SA-6 and ejected.
Another enjoyable mission thanks Vaughan. Once again I am guilty of getting too close to the opposition and paying the price.
