Mission Plan: Take out SA2,SA5 covering the area, secondarily attacking SA8's, engage a/a intercepting flight path.
Engagements-shots made: 2 * 2ship Mig23's. Informed flight that 's are fox2 shooters, end of game... 3 aircrafts downed by fox 1.
Lessons learned: The obvious... mig23 are fox1 shooters. Huge mistake on my behalf.

Posted - 04 Mar 2013 : 22:38:03 As this guy http://youtu.be/w_oCHkCjueQ?t=3m51s said it, I liked it. Would have liked it even more if it would have worked out
I'm waiting for part three. I see I've created a monster :)) |

Took off with the intention of attacking the Kirov as primary target. Soon after take off, heard the air to air engagement between Viper and Mig 23 and friendlies going down, turned to assist, lost Homer during merge.
The two remaining Mig 23's were definitely on something, they chased me down to low altitude before engaging with the TASMO flights before being suppressed.
Tried to regroup and push on, but were redirected to incoming aircraft, Reds strayed into the SA11's and got shot down.
Sabre got target fixated and almost ignored the incoming Mig23's despite AWACS calls. Avoided those and was tasked to provide air cover over steerpoint 6, unable to distinguish friendlies from enemy at low altitude. Eventually tasked to engage 4 Mig29A's, killed one before being splashed and ejecting.
What should have been a challenging TE turned into a desperate fight for survival. With the right tactics and respect for the Mig23's and Mig21-bis it could have been very different.

Took off and climbed A27 heading to SP3. Saw and heard Weasel engaged with M23 to our 1 o'clock and pushed out west of FP to avoid engagement. Continued to SP3 and orbitted at that point while SEADs pushed on. Stud joined us and we moved a littel further on to avoid collisions.
We decided to go low to start our attack but were jumped by M29A's and had to egress. We climbed and went past Stud and were then called by CHalis to delouse friendly to west. Found and locked the bandit as instructed. I hard locked the target and getting no BS calls fired a 9X only to discover I had locked Jack. Luckily my missile never made it.
We turned back t head to wards the target but as the SEADs had been taken out we were instructed to RTB.

Mission Outcome: MF
Took off with around 30 - 40 miles separation from the other flights and kept at a stead 300 knots to allow SEAD flights time to get in and do their thing. We ended up catching up with the other flights though and due to them being engaged with bandits started a holding pattern at our steerpoint 3. As we then pushed towards target there was a lone MIG23 at angles 2 which then turned hot on us so Doof went and took him out with a heater. We then started to drop down to low level but as we reached about angles 5 saw 4 MIG21's on our nose so I called the flight to turn cold and gain altitude. Not long after this we saw the other TASMO flight pushing towards target at a fairly high altitude so we continued in at angles 10 but not long after trespassing on the Kirov's SA10 threat circle we heard AWACS call to abort the flight and RTB. I ordered us to turn home but we were getting spiked by MIG29's to our 7 so as we gained altitude I called to jettison stores so we could turn to engage. Novac and myself then turned hot to engage and I got a kill on a MIG29. After that we RTB'd, had some MIG21's flying across our flight path on the way home which we monitored but they were no issue.
Good mission but I think with the threat of the ships SAM defences it made people fly very cautiously, also with a full air to ground load out and tanks I was not prepared to take my flight into any engagements which meant the SEAD flights had a pretty tough job dealing with all the air threats whilst taking out the SAM threats. Despite getting a failure I quite like the tough missions as it does make us think and have to work better together to achieve our mission.

Posted - 04 Mar 2013 : 12:28:14 Well, I guess as author I'd best let you into my thinking...
I split the Kirov from the rest of the group to make it one big, but killable, SAM site. The briefing mentioned the rest of the group was berthed - it was parked up and as such would not become an issue in that all the ships are effectively big static targets.
The SEAD Escort was primarily to attack the Kirov and knock out its three SAM radars. This is best done by three waves of 2-4 HARMs, leaving the way clear for the bombers. If there was a flaw in my thinking, it is that its actually possible to kill the Kirov using HARMs alone if too many are shot at it! The Kuznetzov was then easy meat for the bombers, after the remaining static SAMs (SA2, SA3, etc) are destroyed. Unfortunately the SA-3 was partly protected by a building, oversite on my part there. Rest of the group were not an issue...
The A-A threat was accumulated using missile count - I always try to even up the number of missiles between good and bad guys, but usually with the red AI a slight numerical advantage. In this one, the blues had the advantage with SEAD carrying slammers. I'm a little bemused in that I got shot down by an AA8 while trying my best to avoid an active missile when no enemy had them loaded.
For the record, off the top of my head, last night there were: AA-2C x 32 AA-2D x 24 AA-7R x 8 AA-8 x 16 AA-11 x 8
88 enemy missiles in total, but 60 of these were less capable than the AIM-9B! In contrast, the blues had 16 slammers, and 48 AIM-9X.
Finally, when I build TEs I build them in bits. I make sure the Kirov can be killed by me in single player mode (usually jumping to different planes during the attack if required), then I add some SAM threats, including some to avoid (SA-11 in this case). Finally I add A-A threat based on what I said earlier.
Close co-operation (as hinted to in the briefing, between the SEAD flights would have taken care of the Kirov. The SEAD flights should always have considered the Kirov as its most definite primary target, Suppression of Enemy Air Defence, the Kirov is bristling with Air Defences. I did surprise me somewhat to hear during briefing one SEAD flight were going to pay no attention to the Kirov, letting the other take care of it. SEAD were the killers last night - TASMO, Tactical Support of Maritime Operations, were there to support the SEAD, mop up the remainder last night if you will. Indeed, the bombers were on a veritable milk run last night... ;) Sorry if it never worked out that way!! :) |
